    CAMP HURONDA
    Owned and operated by Diabetes Canada, Camp Huronda lies on a beautifully wooded peninsula on Lake Waseosa near Huntsville. This superb 110-acre setting offers permanent camp facilities for children living with type 1 diabetes through carefully planned programs that provide children with a summer of adventure, fun, learning and health care.

    At D-Camps, children enjoy an authentic camp experience while having all of their diabetes needs met by a team of skilled medical professionals. For fun and skill building, our awesome program team leads the way Our medical staff includes endocrinologists, doctors, nurses, dietitians as well as health-care students, residents, and interns. Together, they form a support network to help campers manage their diabetes more independently.

    Diabetes Canada camps and youth programs are aimed at children and youth affected by type 1 diabetes. These overnight programs emphasize participation in camp activities and provide an opportunity for diabetes education. Camp also helps youth to gain independence and self- discipline in managing their diabetes. The goals of Diabetes Canada camps are:
    ● Teach independent, self-management of diabetes
    ● Foster lasting friendships
    ● Improve self-esteem
    ● Provide a safe, fun, and educational camp experience

    ABOUT THE ROLE:

    The Climbing Head is responsible for all aspects of the challenge course program including dynamic team elements, static course, swing shot, four-sided climbing tower and low ropes elements. Additionally, the Climbing Head is responsible for supporting the Challenge Course Instructors, maintaining all challenge course equipment, ensuring that all programs are meeting risk management standards and delivering an experiential, camper-focused experience. In conjunction with the Leadership Team the Climbing Head will be responsible for the general management of Camp Huronda in addition they will play a leading role in planning and facilitating staff training week. They will work closely with the Waterfront, Program, and Land Area Heads to coordinate all camp programming.

    RESPONIBILITIES :

  • Provide the required skills and expertise to operate a safe and effective climbing/challenge course program for all ages and abilities.
  • Ensure safety of campers and staff.
  • Help to develop the protocols and expectations of climbing staff and climbing/challenge course program.
  • Provide and facilitate training for staff for the climbing program.
  • Define and inform all staff of their roles, responsibilities, and expectations in your area.
  • Maintain supervision and leadership of assigned staff for the duration of the summer.
  • Assist campers and staff in meeting daily and personal needs.
  • Attend all staff training; assist and facilitate training where necessary.
  • Attend camp sessions on time and participate actively in camp life.
  • Be organized and prepared for all camp sessions, arriving five minutes prior to the commencement of each activity in the designated program area.
  • Design a program plan that accommodates different skill levels and abilities of campers.
  • Practice, follow, and instill challenge by choice practices.
  • Ensure the equipment is safe and ready for use.
  • Supervise staff and participants during mealtimes.
  • Ensure that all campers follow camp rules, respecting each other, and the facility.
  • Actively and enthusiastically assist in the operation of camp.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and constructive relationship with all staff members.
  • Report problems, situations, and difficulties to the Camp Coordinator.
  • Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned by the Camp Coordinator or Assistant Camp Directors.
  • Contract Dates: May 27 – August 30, 2024

  • Note: Offers and interviews are conditional on anticipated certifications. Please provide an updated list of current certifications and dates of anticipated achievement of certifications at the time of employment.

    All new and returning staff must provide either a CRC or CRC and VSS according to the Diabetes Canada D-Camps policy.

    We will accept a criminal record check that has been completed within 12 months of hire and a vulnerable sector check within 3 years. We will also accept valid education service cards from Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Ontario. The original check(s) must be verified by Association staff for authenticity and a copy will be taken for our files.

    Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada and, where applicable, must have a valid work permit or study permit that allows the candidate to fulfill the requirements of the role.
