Overview:


Reporting to the Coordinator, Leisure Services in Aquatics, this supervisory position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of aquatic facilities, including the seasonal operations of two outdoor pools, and overseeing a large diverse work team of instructor/lifeguard staff in all of the aquatic facilities.

This position is also primarily responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of all Aquatic recreation programs, services, and special events.


Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate aquatic instructional, competitive, and recreational programs, as well as special events.
  • Assess and identify community needs through programming workshops, conducting market research, researching trends, utilization of statistics, and demographics.
  • Perform risk management to ensure aquatic facilities are operating safely and effectively.
  • Respond effectively to customer service issues, complaints, emergencies, sensitive situations and critical incidents.
  • Supervise, mentor, train, schedule, and provide feedback to aquatic staff.
  • Schedule staff effectively, for safety, efficiency, and optimal customer service.
  • Coordinate, lead, and facilitate staff meetings, team building activities, and inservice training.
  • Develop, administer, and manage program fee budget.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, objectives and philosophy of organized community recreation in aquatic recreational facilities.
  • Knowledge of the aquatic recreational needs and interests of the citizens in the community.
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work performed.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate and administer aquatic service operations and programs.
  • Ability to provide liaison to outside agencies, health, police, schools, community agencies, and user groups.
  • Ability to develop and promote community interest and involvement in the aquatic programs and operations provided.
  • Ability to provide information and assistance regarding Aquatic Services activities and programs.
  • Ability to contribute to the recruitment and hiring of new staff, including interviews.
  • Ability to supervise, create and motivate teams, develop objectives, coach and mentor staff, assign and delegate work, assign, ensure quality and service standards are met.
  • Ability to coordinate and schedule the work of aquatic staff, ensuring staffing levels are safe, efficient, and provide optimal customer service.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, professionally and courteously with the public and coworkers and work well with others in varied circumstances, including times of pressure or in stressful or sensitive situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of groups, businesses and association members.
  • Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to prepare and administer budgets.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain correspondence, records and reports.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook as well as REDMS or a similar records management system and PerfectMind or a similar computerized program registration system.
  • Ability to successful clear a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Completion of a twoyear Diploma in community recreation, recreation programming, recreation management or related discipline supplemented by courses in firstaid, lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction, and pool operation and maintenance plus a minimum of 5 years related experience in aquatics including supervisory responsibilities OR an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Lifesaving Society, Life Saving Instructor Certificate


  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate

  • Level "C" & AED
  • National Lifeguard Service Award
  • Pool Option
  • National Lifeguard Service Award
  • Water Park Option
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • B.C.R.P.A. Pool Operator
  • Level 1 &
  • B.C.R.P.A Aquatic Fitness Module or equivalent


  • Occupational First Aid
