Job Summary:

Established in 1880, the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) is among the most respected art institutions in the world.

Designed by architect Moshe Safdie and opened in 1988, this stunning building of granite and glass is one of the most striking landmarks in Ottawa.

It is currently home to over 75,000 works of art and extensive library and archival holdings, which includes the finest collections of Indigenous, Canadian and European art in the country.

The Gallery has recently renewed its narrative on Indigenous and Canadian art, sharing a compelling story of artistic production on this land from past to present.

NGC is committed to the core values of fostering belonging, embracing change, leading boldly and evolving and learning together.

The National Gallery of Canada remains alert to new ways to create transformation experiences with art for in person and online audiences, envisioning a future in which art has the power to build bridges, deepen relationships, and advance a more equitable society.

The Vice President of Curatorial Research, Collections and Exhibitions (VP) leads the teams responsible for acquiring, preserving, researching, documenting, contextualizing and programming historical and contemporary works of art to represent and present the visual arts heritage in Canada and from around the world.

Reporting to the Director and Chief Executive Officer, the VP is a member of the NGC's Senior Management team and provides strategic leadership and operational oversight in the areas of curatorial research and acquisitions, exhibitions, loans, collections management and digitization, conservation and stewardship, library and archives, and outreach.

A strong communicator, the VP cultivates strong relationships with donors and the national and international art community.

A strong collaborator, the VP cultivates strong relationships with external NGC stakeholders including patrons and potential donors and the national and international art community.

Focused on models of collaboration, the VP is committed to creating inclusive and accessible art experiences, sharing stories, exploring differences, and building meaningful relationships.

The incumbent leads in their areas of expertise and fosters robust dialogue with external and internal stakeholders around matters of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (JEDI&A), decolonization, repatriation, and stewardship practices.

The VP will bring a vibrant, robust and innovative vision to the NGC's collection and presentation of art and arts discourses.

This leader will nurture a culture of inclusive and collaborative teams where people feel agency and support. The VP will be working closely with the VP of the Gallery's Indigenous Ways and Decolonization Department.

The VP will also work closely with the Learning and Community Engagement Department to develop and create accessible and community-centred programming, and with the Publications team in the development of historical and contemporary art publications.
