PURPOSE OF POSITION


Reporting to the Waste and Diversion Team Leader, performs general administrative, operational and maintenance duties at municipal waste/recycling transfer and disposal sites.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directing and assisting the public as they enter the waste disposal site to ensure incoming waste, including blue box and diversion materials are placed in the appropriate areas; rejecting unacceptable items; documenting quantity and type in the applicable record.
  • Performing general operational and administrative duties (opens and closes, operates weight scale, checks permits and stickers, keeps all records and daily logs).
  • Issuing, collecting, and recording financial transactions (bills, invoices, payments, receipts, reconciliation).
  • Maintaining general upkeep of waste disposal site in neat condition (clearing debris, etc.).
  • Taking reasonable precautions and actions to mitigate risks to users and ensure a safe environment for staff and the public.
  • Operating landfill equipment, including but not limited to: pay loaders, compactors, dump trucks, and bin movements.
  • Placing waste to established grades.
  • Compacting and/or covering waste on a daily basis to (MOECC) requirements.
  • Performing routine daily inspection and maintenance of landfill equipment and accurately complete appropriate documentation of equipment, conditions, fuel and fluid.
  • Maintaining inventory of all equipment, materials, signs and supplies. Coordinate replacement as required.
  • Assisting where and when needed during staff shortages and/or emergency situations.
  • Responding and/or redirecting public inquiries and/or complaints to supervisor.
  • Responsible, as an employee, for health & safety under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA).

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Education and Experience:


  • OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in a customer service role, preferably within an environmental setting.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, preferably within a municipal setting.
  • Valid DZ Driver's License.

Work Requires:


  • A working understanding of all applicable legislation, bylaws, and policies related to solid waste operations and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment and initiative when dealing with coworkers, supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to timely and courteous customer service.
  • Good judgment and initiative and the ability to follow directions.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Basic computer literacy and Microsoft Office skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work occurs in landfill facility with a high degree of public contact. There is a substantial amount of heavy lifting and carrying in all weather conditions.

A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working near heavy equipment, vehicles, tools and hazardous chemicals is required.

There is a high risk of exposure to various risks such as dust, chemicals, smells, broken glass and sharp objects, as well as the potential for slips when moving items.

Schedule will include weekend and weekday shifts.

$24.95-$29.18 per hour
