Purpose:


To Facilitate and investigate the installation of Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) and Access Control related devices to the York University community and to assist with the function, administration and delivery of CCTV, Door Access and key control services to the York University community.


Education:


Community College diploma in a related field (Law and Security, Police Foundations, etc.) or equivalent training, experience and education in a security or related field, valid Ontario Security Guard licence, valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's licence in good standing.

current valid First Aid and CPR Certificates required.


Experience:


A minimum of 2 years' experience working with CCTV and access control technology including programming CCTV equipment, CCTV Cameras, Matrix switchers, key control processes and as well as a fundamental understanding of electronic access control systems.

Two years' York University Security Services experience preferred or equivalent experience in a campus or similar environment. The incumbent must have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted


Skills:


Essential:

- intermediate word-processing (MS Word).

  • Advanced spreadsheet skills (MS Excel).
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with computers.
  • Basic knowledge of Ontario Building Code and Fire Code principles.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to the University community.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, including oral, written and listening.

  • Must successfully complete the York Security Services Advance Patrol Training certification program as required.
  • A position designate as bilingual will require written and oral fluency in the French and English languages. Language proficiency tests will be administered.

Preferred:

  • Proven and effective presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Ontario Defensive Driving Certificate.
  • Familiarization with federal, provincial, and municipal laws applicable in a university environment, such as the Provincial/Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. familiarization with the Ontario Privacy Commissioner Guidelines for Using Video Surveillance Cameras in Public PlacesFamiliarization with federal, provincial, and municipal laws applicable in a university environment.

Additional Notes:

Office Environment and associated demands. Prolonged periods of detailed work in front of computer screen. Work in cooled server rooms is required. The nature of some assigned duties includes the potential for viewing CCTV images that may be graphic in nature. Hours of work may change from time to time based on the needs of the department, such as evenings/weekends.

May be expected to respond with short notice for time sensitive recovery or set-up of video recordings or building access needs.

Assignments include walking and cycling, vehicle patrols, on campus or elsewhere for up to 12-hour periods on rotating shifts, or as scheduled based on operating requirements, 24/7/365.

Lifting and carrying up to 12 kg. Good grasping and handling skills. Patrols are carried out under all weather conditions. Rapid response by foot or cycle to critical incidents.
Works independently and observes and abides by unit, departmental and University policies, programs, rules, regulations and standard operating procedures.

Identifies and follows-up on all unusual circumstances and building maintenance issues as related to Health and Safety matters reported to or noted while on regular patrols.

Handles all situations with sensitivity, tact and discretion, and advises the supervisor of action taken or of assistance required. Other as requiredPeak periods occur throughout the year and are dependent upon the scheduling of special events or student functions (i.e. registration fair, orientation week, convocation, etc.) and the overall university academic year.


Definable peak periods include:

September, October, January, February and MarchPositions designated as bilingual will require written and oral fluency in the French and English languages.

Language proficiency tests will be administered. Advancement within Security Services based upon competition.
