Aviation Services is a division of the Department of Lands and Forestry responsible for providing helicopter support for all provincial government departments and agencies.

About Our Opportunity:

Under the overall supervision of the Operations Manager and reporting to the Chief Pilot, the Aircraft Pilot 2 will act as a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) responsible for the safe and efficient operation of department aircraft.

Primary Accountabilities:

Mission profiles include, but are not limited to, aerial reconnaissance and surveys, wildfire suppression, forest and wildlife management, enforcement, executive transport, and inland search and rescue.

The Aircraft Pilot 2 will be required to closely interact with the Emergency Management Office (EMO), the RCMP, and other police agencies.

The applicant must be able to act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) in a single-crew environment.

The Aircraft Pilot 2 will be responsible for all phases of the helicopter flight. This includes pre-flight planning such as weather interpretation, weight and balance computations, and safety briefings.

Inflight duties include the safe and efficient operation of the helicopter, the overall safety and security of the aircraft, passengers, and cargo.

Post-flight requirements will include logbook entries, reporting of aircraft defects as required, and completion of all documents and paperwork as required by regulations and department policy.

Qualifications and Experience:

Applicants must possess a valid Transport Canada Commercial Pilot's License-Helicopters (CPL-H).

A minimum of 2000 hours pilot-in-command flight experience on helicopters. Minimum 1500 hours of pilot in-command flight experience on turbine helicopters.

Endorsement on the Airbus AS350 (EC30) series helicopter.

Current Pilot Proficiency Check (PPC) on the Airbus AS350 (EC30) series an asset.

While not required, it is considered an asset if you have Current Pilot Proficiency Check (PPC) on the Airbus AS350B3E (H-125) series an asset.

You must have knowledge and extensive experience of wildfire suppression procedures, wildlife surveys, cargo slinging, and water bucketing.

As the Aircraft Pilot 2, you must be cognizant of relevant Canadian Aviation Regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations, and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations.

Good judgment and decision-making are imperative.

The applicant must be able to work with mínimal supervision and carry out all flight and ground duties in a professional and safe manner; including pre-flight and post-flight activities that relate to the specific flight.

Other duties (non-flying) will be assigned by the Chief Pilot or Operations Manager as required.

Experience in remote unprepared landing areas is essential. Confidentiality and discretion are imperative.

Experience with both Foreflight and Cirro flight management software would be an asset.

Preferred applicants will have experience with public outreach and community relations.

Strong presentation skills, as well as the ability to organize and facilitate special projects will be considered assets to the position.

Additional Information:

Flight duties may necessitate extended stays away from the main Aviation Services' base in Shubenacadie. The applicant must reside or be available to report to duty within 60 minutes as required for standby purposes.
