JOB SUMMARY & REQUIREMENTS
Reporting to the Manager, Abstracting & Coding, the Coding Specialist is responsible for the timely and accurate coding and abstracting of patient health and demographic information, which directly:

contributes to and impacts RVH funding per the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) funding formula and Health-Based Allocation Model (HBAM)

- supports allocation of resource weights to cases.
- informs and guides research projects
- determines the health care needs for the delivery of services in the community
- supports obtaining resources for new programs

Responsible for the completion of this data in conformance with the guidelines set out by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), Ministry of Health (MOHLTC), and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) and in accordance with firm deadlines set by these entities.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program.
Active registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Additional Required Competencies:

Thorough knowledge of current Canadian Coding Standards for ICD10CA/CCI, DAD/NACRS Abstracting requirements.
Must have excellent skills for case analysis and interpretation for ICD10CA coding classification.
Familiarity with ICD10CA and CCI Folio product required.
Must have an understanding and knowledge of grouping and weighting methodologies (i.e. CMG, RIW, HIG, Complexity, CACS and ACW).
Ability to work as a team member as well as autonomously, prioritize workload, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure and show good judgment.
Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills are required.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
