JOB SUMMARY


The Research Associate (Senior Researcher) will develop/design, pursue funding for, implement and publish research studies related to methods of research including but not limited to: the impact of published research; methods of peer-review at funding agencies and among health research journals; measures of excellence and equity in research and among researchers; open science; journalology; advanced methods of reporting research (such as captured on the EQUATOR website) (Principal Investigator, Professor Karim Khan).

This research has international scope—the content is not limited to Canada.


This position requires a strong research background, proven leadership success, excellent writing skills and familiarity with requirements and guidelines related to grant funding processes and peer-review.

The Research Associate (Senior Researcher) will regularly communicate with co-investigators and government and community stakeholders.


ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Professor Khan's research program is based at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHHM). CHHM is a University of British Columbia Senate-approved organization affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. The research centre improves the lives of Canadians by decreasing the burden of arthritis and fall-related fractures.

The Centre's research focuses on prevention, detection, and improved treatment of bone and joint diseases so that Canadians can enjoy the freedom that comes with mobility.


WORK PERFORMED

  • Design and implement research studies and related programs, including planning, managing and handling communications for research projects;
  • Identify research synergies and create opportunities for new avenues of research;
  • Set priorities and goals, prepare budgets and forecast study staffing requirements;
  • Write and submit manuscripts;
  • Identify, build and facilitate linkages with researchers, funding and other agencies (e.g. CIHR, Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, NSERC, SSHREC and their international corollaries);
  • Engage with and establish relationships with relevant government and community stakeholders;
  • Manage regulatory documentation around study approval, amendments and renewal process;
  • Gather, review and synthesize relevant literature;
  • Develop KT strategies;
  • Organize and lead research team meetings;
  • Design data analysis plans;
  • Conduct data analysis and interpret findings;
  • Provide content expertise in the area of health research related to research synthesis with a particular focus on reporting methods, peerreview, research reproducibility, research transparency, open science and science;
  • Content expertise in rehabilitation/mobility/musculoskeletal conditions, arthritis is essential
  • Engage regularly with other members of what is planned to be an expanding research group;
  • Mentor existing graduate students and lead journal club. Professor Khan anticipates this role will become larger over time as he is in a recruiting phase.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR


This position requires research experience, excellent communication skills, tact, judgment and discretion in working with various senior professionals and collaborating with internal and external agencies.

Knowledge, awareness, confidence and sensitivity to personal data and other issues are required.

Errors in decision making may compromise the reputation of the PI, the research team and their collaborators as well as high-profile stakeholders (as listed above, including—and most importantly-CIHR).

Because the research may influence how peer-review is undertaken in Canada, the work will have national scrutiny that may lead to media attention.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works with wide latitude under the general direction of Professor Karim Khan.


SUPERVISION GIVEN


Provides direction and content knowledge and experience to research colleagues in the national network of researchers in this field, trainees (provides mentorship) and the larger research team.

Provides functional direction to researchers. May manage staff.

The incumbent will train and act as a resource for faculty, staff, and students on specific techniques, procedures and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS


Clinical training (without the need for licencing in Canada) and PhD with at least 7 years of post PhD training and work.
