Financial Sector Regulation and Policy Division - Employment Pensions Branch

The key role of the Employment Pensions branch is to monitor and enhance the retirement benefits of Albertans who are covered under the Employment Pension Plans Act (EPPA).

This is achieved by ongoing monitoring of pension plans registered under the EPPA to ensure that the plan is in compliance with the Act, assessing and correcting those pension plans where the documentation and administrative practices do not conform to legislative requirements, and working with stakeholders to ensure the ongoing viability of their plans.

As a Pension Compliance Officer, you will be a part of a team that analyzes and assesses pension plans for compliance with the Employment Pension Plans Act.

You will monitor a portfolio of pension plans for compliance with the Act by reviewing filed documents and leading detailed examinations of pension plans, including onsite visits.

When issues arise, you will communicate orally and in writing with plan administrators and consultants to resolve the concerns. You will also deal with inquiries from the general public about the rules surrounding their various benefit entitlements.

To be successful in this position, you will need to possess strong analytical and communication skills, diplomacy and good judgment as well as the ability to learn quickly in a complex technical area and to work as part of a team.

The Compliance Officer (CO) reports to the Manager, Compliance & Operations.

The incumbent uses knowledge, judgment and expertise to monitor a plan's compliance, assess key documentation, identify compliance issues and intervene where necessary to ensure a pension plan remains compliant with legislative standards, from initial registration to plan wind-up.

The incumbent also identifies and brings to the attention of the Deputy Superintendent and Manager issues that arise in the administration of the legislation that require review and possible legislative amendment.

The incumbent identifies the risks and risk level associated with a plan in terms of its funding, communication and administration, and recommends and implements appropriate corrective action to mitigate the risks identified.

The overall objective of the work is to help ensure the development, growth and ongoing viability of pension plans registered in Alberta.


Qualifications:

A university degree in a related field (business, management, human resources or actuarial science) is required. Experience with MS Office is required.

Experience working with the Employment Pensions Plan Act, human resources and/or in actuarial practices would be considered an asset. Certification in pension training from either Humber College (PPAC designation) or the International Foundation (CEBS) is also an asset.


Equivalencies may be considered on a one for one basis of directly related education or directly related experience, where 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Salary:

$2,310.48 to $3,030.81 bi-weekly ($60,303 - $79,104 /year)

Effective September 1, 2023
$2,345.14 to $3,076.28 bi-weekly ($61,208 - $80,290 / year)
