Reporting to the Manager, Workplace Accommodations, and acting as a key player within Air Canada's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team, the Accommodation and Accessibility Manager will be responsible for day-to-day management of employee accommodation requests received by the Workplace Accommodation Office.


The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting with employee-side compliance of Air Canada's strategy under the Accessible Canada Act (ACA).

They will participate in the consultation process and development of accessibility plans and progress reports under the Accessible Canada Act.


Key Functions & Accountabilities

  • Conduct gap analysis of employee accessibility needs and the development of accessibility plans. Examine existing structure and redesign if required to ensure compliance with the ACA.
  • Facilitate the submission of accommodation requests to ensure that submission requirements are met.
  • Respond to requests within reasonable timelines and undertake assessment of requests.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (disability management, recruitment, occupational health services, labour relations, and human resources) to analyze information, problem solve and propose creative accommodation measures and adaptations.
  • Collaborate with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team to raise awareness of issues affecting peoples with various abilities.
  • Collaborate in the development and delivery of training and presentations regarding accommodation and accessibility. Prepare information packages and tools to assist with sensitizing managers to specific issues related to accommodation in the workplace.
  • Document processes for accommodation and accessibility requests including all accommodations and adaptations for statistical purposes and historical references.
  • Identify organization accommodation trends and propose tools to assist management to address particular situations.
  • Compile information and prepare reports on new and ongoing accommodation and accessibility requests. This includes all reports required under the ACA.
  • Assist in management of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).
  • Provide information to the legal department when requests escalate to potential litigation.
  • Use independent judgment and discretion to effectively manage confidential information.

Qualifications

  • University degree in human resources, law, social science, or equivalent experience.
  • 24 years of experience in addressing workplace accommodations and/or addressing workplace disability issues.
  • Strong understanding of the concepts of the duty to accommodate and undue hardship.
  • Desire to be part of a comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team.
  • Adept at project management and/or change management.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Must be familiar with Canadian employment legislation including the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Accessibility Canada Act, and the Employment Equity Act.
  • Must be available and willing to travel when required.

Key Capabilities Needed

  • Legal or Human Resources experience.
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal legislation and case law (Canadian Human Rights Act, Accessible Canada Act).
  • Superior analytical and writing skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience providing training to employees of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to employees of diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficient in French and English.
  • Ability to multitask and perform in highpressure and timesensitive situations.
  • Adept in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with, and influence people at various levels of an organization and with a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
