Full-Time Permanent Unionized Position


For 50 years Nellie's has been providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area.

We operate programs and services, for women and their children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness.

Nellie's works to lessen homelessness for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact of trauma.


Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations.

In addition to our shelter, Nellie's operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provide aftercare support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women and gender-diverse people living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

Nellie's is currently looking to hire 2 Community Housing Program Support Workers to support the Community Housing Program Supervisor.

The main function of this position is to provide housing help support to women and gender-diverse people and do outreach in the community.

The majority of this work will be supporting women who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness and supporting individuals and families who are fleeing violence.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Support Individuals and Families to Find and Maintain Housing

  • Work with the Community Housing Program Worker in the community to do outreach and provide housing help support
  • Go to community agencies at various locations across Toronto to provide dropin housing help for women and genderdiverse people
  • Provide information about subsidized housing and private market housing
  • Support individuals to access the shelter system
  • Support individuals in selecting housing options
  • Support individuals to search for private market housing options
  • Assist individuals with forms and documentation that need to be completed
  • Provide accompaniments to appointments in the community

Advocacy

  • Advocate with housing providers and community services
  • Provide eviction prevention support
  • Arrange for language interpretation for appointments as needed

Documentation

  • Maintain all records required by funders: electronic client records (WISH), client lists and files, program files
  • Support the Community Housing Program Worker in tracking and analyzing data

Assist Individuals in Establishing a Community Support Network

  • Provide information about community supports (e.g. identification, income support, taxes, food banks)
  • Support with connection to services and support with outside agencies
  • Support the Community Housing Program Worker to outreach and network with organizations in the community

Community Education

  • Develop and facilitate workshops related to housing help
  • Attend webinars, trainings and meetings about housing support

Team Building

  • Contribute to the teambuilding process
  • Participate in meetings with the Community Support and Outreach team to review client cases and support needs
  • Consult and coordinate with the Community Support and Outreach team appropriately
  • Work independently and as part of a larger team to support the overall needs of the client

Qualifications

  • Commitment to AR/AO
  • Postsecondary education and/or at least two years of relevant work experience
  • Fluency in English is essential (oral and written), second language is an asset
  • Understanding the importance of working from a harm reduction perspective
  • Administrative and organizational skills, as well as familiarity with MS Office
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Familiarity with local community organizations
  • Ability to work flexible hours; position may occasionally involve evening and weekend work
  • Valid CPR / First Aid Certification

Assets

  • Experience working with people experiencing homelessness
  • Experiencing working with people who have experienced domestic violence
  • Experience working with people with mental health and substance use challenges
  • Knowledge of the immigration system
  • Workshop development and facilitation skills
  • CPI certification

Expected hours: 35 hours per week

Salary:
$24.00 per hour
