Job Summary:


Maintenance carpenter helper assists in various tasks essential to construction, and maintenance including but not limited to carrying materials, and operating tools, while maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Additionally, this role extends to proficiently completing assigned tasks for the maintenance department across all Columbia International College (CIC) managed buildings and leased properties.

Balancing construction and general maintenance duties, the Maintenance carpenter helper will contribute to the seamless functionality and care.


Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Load and unload construction materials, and move materials to job sites
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
  • Fit and install windows, doors, stairs, mouldings and hardware
  • Collaborate with tradespersons such as carpenters, painters, plumbers, to execute tasks efficiently
  • Remove rubble and other debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and other equipment
  • Demonstrating excellent skills in operating pneumatic and electric tools, as well as having knowledge of different building materials
  • Complete basic tasks including, but not limited to: clean up; moving and assembling of furniture; changing ceiling tiles; painting, and work on special projects as assigned.
  • Execute a range of different painting techniques, such as cutting, rolling, and spraying, etc.
  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of piping systems, fixtures, and other plumbing equipment
  • Respond promptly, courteously, and appropriately to service requests and issues using the ticket system via RMS and complete them in a timely and costefficient manner
  • Perform general groundskeeping duties as needed, including coordinating cleaning, snow removal, and landscaping operations.
  • Communicates with the Maintenance Supervisor for needed advice, product information, and quality assurance guidance
  • Interact with students and employees in a courteous and friendly manner
  • Work safely and take special precautions to protect against injury, as well as ensure compliance with all applicable provincial and federal labour relations
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and ensure a safe work environment
  • Participate in assisting the maintenance department with the daytoday operations while handling carpenter inquiries
  • Represent CIC in a professional manner
  • Perform other activities at construction sites, as directed.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • 2+ years of related experience
  • Ability and knowledge in operating power tools, hand tools, and other tools required to assist with completion of required tasks
  • Must be comfortable working on ladders and from heights up to 10m
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Approaches situations proactively, with a positive attitude
  • Can multitask, work well under pressure, juggle competing tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Highly motivated individual and an independent thinker.
  • Valid G Driver's license
  • Onthe job training will be provided

Hours of Work:
