As a Planner 2, you will support The City's regional and intermunicipal initiatives by working in a policy planning and implementation role. You will work with internal and external partners on analytical tasks related to land use planning, policy planning and infrastructure planning. You will proactively manage a range of other general City planning responsibilities, including supporting decision-making committees, implementing various City planning policies and processes, articulating and supporting strategic outcomes, and facilitating solutions that improve the context for regional and intermunicipal growth around the city. Primary duties include:
  • Support senior management and Council decision-making via analysis, particularly on the subjects of the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board Growth and Servicing Plans, and intermunicipal development plans.
  • Evaluate cross corporate input and establish City positions when circulated on intermunicipal and Regional Evaluation Framework plans and applications.
  • Collaborate with professionals from neighbouring municipalities to establish agendas and content for Calgary's Intermunicipal Committees.
  • Provide briefing materials to support city representatives at The Calgary Metropolitan Region Board and Calgary's Intermunicipal Committees.
  • Provide administrative advice to elected officials and report on key issues to the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee of Council.
  • Provide support to possible Intermunicipal Appeals and Calgary Metropolitan Region Board challenges.
  • Respond to high priority issues, politically sensitive situations and customer service requests.
  • Qualifications
  • A degree in Planning that is recognized by the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) and at least 3 years of relevant planning experience. OR
  • A degree in a Planning-related discipline, and at least 4 years of relevant planning experience.
  • Previous working experience in urban environment, experience in capital budget planning, and experience presenting to external parties (citizens, industry, and approving authorities) will be considered assets.
  • Experience dealing with intermunicipal and/or regional committees is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of planning policy and development review processes.
  • You are a strong communicator with excellent customer service skills and a demonstrated ability to build beneficial relationships, facilitate conflict resolution, and contribute to team goals.
  • Success in this role requires a strong strategic and analytical thinker with a focus on change management.
