Here is what you will be doing:

  • Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Clinical Reviews and/or the Director, Health Technology Assessment, the Clinical Epidemiologist develops and conducts systematic reviews of clinical literature to support assessments of the effectiveness of a broad range of health technologies. The clinical epidemiologist provides leadership in the synthesis of the gathered information in a systematic, transparent, and robust manner and presents findings from the reviews to the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee to inform their recommendations on the public funding and use of health technologies in Ontario. This position works collaboratively with (i) cross functional team members which includes medical librarians, health economists, patient engagement specialists, and project coordinators/project managers and (ii) external stakeholders such as clinical experts and organizational partners to contextualize the systematic reviews for Ontario.
Here is what you will need to be successful:


  • Clinical Analysis:
  • Leads, plans and develops systematic reviews that will be used to assess the effectiveness of health technologies and subsequently form the basis for policy recommendations on public funding of different health technologies.
  • Establishes the research question, inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant outcome measures of effectiveness and methods for synthesis or metaanalysis of data.
  • Liaises and works with clinical experts and other stakeholders to contextualize scientific evidence and refine research questions.
  • Ensures relevant clinical and research methodology is applied in assessing the quality of the evidence for effectiveness and generalizability.
  • Reviews and critically appraises published literature on health technologies, clinical interventions and health services.
  • Serves as an expert resource on the methodology and synthesis of various types of clinical trials and observational scientific evidence.
  • Has accountability for the accurate and robust presentation of scientific evidence to the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee.
  • Project Management, Communication, Consultation Skills:
  • Regularly updates and informs the Manager, Clinical Reviews on all aspects of clinical review process.
  • Communicates with project Manager and Project Coordinator to ensure assigned deliverables are completed on time.
  • Leads preparation of reports/presentation materials and provides expertise on the interpretation of findings from clinical reviews to the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee.
  • Leads in writing, designing and presenting reports to communicate findings and conclusions of clinical reviews.
  • Leads in identifying and liaising with external stakeholders/organizations/individuals in consultation with Manager and Director, HTA.
  • Plays a critical role in collaboration with Manager and Director in developing and initiating content, processes and methods in the development [of HTAs] and related activities across Ontario Health and externally.
  • Relationship Management:
  • Develops relationships with colleagues within team, across the organization and externally to understand clinical context and needs, share information and provide assistance in understanding methodologies and results.
  • Works in collaboration with health economists and patient engagement analysts to ensure the economic and the patient engagement analyses align with the clinical review component of the health technology assessment.
  • Education and Experience
  • Minimum required level and specialty/discipline:
  • Master's degree in epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, health research methodology, biostatistics, or health technology assessment.
  • Preferred level and specialty/discipline:
  • PhD degree in epidemiology, health research methodology or health technology assessment.
