The Opportunity:

The Manager, Sales Strategy will play an important role in elevating Maple Leaf's category stewardship and thought leadership, as well as reinforcing our team as the #1 choice partner to help develop category strategies to capitalize on retail opportunities across the Protein department.


This position will be responsible for leading the development and deployment of holistic externally focused category selling stories to enable the success of Maple Leaf Foods key initiatives and growth platforms in the retail channel.

They will integrate consumer, shopper, and category insights from multiple sources to create best in class semi-annual market insights reviews to be presented to our major retail customers.

They will also work closely with our Customer Insights team to adapt and tailor recommendations that are specific to the merchandising strategies and in-store realities of each customer.


The incumbent will also work closely with internal stakeholders to help guide the product innovation process, ensuring that new initiatives are supported by necessary consumer and shopper insights and fit into total store and category opportunities identified in our externally focused category stories.


Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:


  • Create and lead the deployment of best in class externally focused category selling strategies and stories to support key priorities and growth platforms in a way that makes sense for the shopper and the retailer.
  • Collaborate with our Category Sales Development, Marketing and Consumer Research partners to develop an external or retailer point of view of future category visions of our categories; Integrate consumer, shopper, and category insights from multiple sources into holistic and actionable category strategies for our customers.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Category Sales Development to appropriately position our growth platforms and innovation to the trade via our category reviews and customercentric selling stories
  • Facilitate the preparation and presentation of semiannual market insights reviews which translate demographic and market trends into actionable category strategies for our customers
  • Lead the development of bestinclass category review frameworks for each category, including the deployment of appropriate category segmentation across multiple customers and data platforms (Nielsen, POS)
  • Own the project management of future shopper insights initiatives required to support our category strategies, including research projects, data acquisition, etc.
  • Work with Customer Insights Team to determine optimal deployment of category reviews and stories specific to each customer
  • Become an expert on Prepared Meat, Fresh Meat and Plant Protein shoppers to identify opportunities at key customers and sell Maple Leaf Foods expertise leveraging a variety of analytical tools.

What you Bring:


  • Strong shelving and assortment understanding via Vendor Advisor or Category Management experience.

  • Analytical skills developed through experience selling with POS, Shipment, MarketTrack, Panel and Qualitative data.
  • Shopper research methodology understanding.
  • Category Visionary work.
  • Category Management / Vendor Advisor work with a retailer.
  • Trade Marketing / Category Sales Development experience to align customer strategy to future company growth plans and innovation.
  • Selling story creation and selling across categories / retailers.
  • Shopper research implementation with agencies to gain retail advantage.
  • Project management with internal and external resources at multiple levels
