Job Summary


The Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science have partnered to create the SBME, a new flagship entity at UBC, and a top strategic priority for the University and both Faculties.

The SBME is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation.

UBC SBME members will distinguish themselves by deep training in biology, deconstructed using engineering science and design, and applied to the solution of real-world biomedical challenges.

Our SBME faculty conduct research that advances our fundamental understanding of human biology, and yields technologies and therapies that advance our health and wellbeing.

Organizational Status
The Research Technician reports to Dr. Nika Shakiba and works collaboratively with other members of the Shakiba Laboratory.

Work Performed

Participates in the analysis, and reporting of research data, including basic statistical analysis and data visualization using established protocols.

Utilizes standard computational methods and protocols to perform various technical and maintenance related tasks including but not limited to software updates, and ensuring data security and backup procedures are followed.

Assists in performing more complex computational tasks, such as running existing computational code and reporting data outputs.
Prepares, maintains and curates datasets, ensuring data integrity, reliable access, reproducible methods, and compliance with data privacy standards.

Assists with diagnosing computational analysis needs, implements appropriate methods, and provides technical support in the use and development of computational tools and data analysis pipelines under the direct supervision of Dr.

Shakiba.
Maintains software and code repositories, and ensures the availability of computational tools and resources for other lab members.

Prepares and maintains documentation, including but not limited to computational procedures, code, and standards for routine research use by other lab members.

May provide guidance to less experienced lab members and assist in orienting new employees to computational routines, procedures, and the operation of software and systems.

Carries out any other related duties as required, keeping in line with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to supervisor.

Maintains record of tasks/experiments/reports completed and problems encountered akin to a Lab Notebook.

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of Dr.

Nika Shakiba in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.

Supervision Given

May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and best practices as agreed upon by the direct supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
