Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking a Corporate Safety Specialist to develop and maintain all aspects of the organization's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).

Implement plans based on safety audit results in support of safety management best practice.

Ensure policies and programs meet legislative requirements through the evaluation of safety procedures, development and revision of policies, delivery of safety education, investigation and trending of staff safety critical events and promotion of hazard identification.

Ensure safety requirements are met on assigned projects through the development of safe work processes and procedures.

KEY FUNCTION:

Develop and maintain all aspects of the organization's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS). Implement plans based on safety audit results in support of safety management best practice.

Ensure policies and programs meet legislative requirements through the evaluation of safety procedures, development and revision of policies, delivery of safety education, investigation and trending of staff safety critical events and promotion of hazard identification.

Ensure safety requirements are met on assigned projects through the development of safe work processes and procedures.


REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness (OHSW).


DUTIES:


  • Develop, implement and maintain corporate health and safety initiatives linking the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and related regulations, HSMS and OHSW requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Conduct a gap analysis by reviewing the various components of the HSMS, Quality and Patient Safety, Infection Control and Emergency Preparedness, statutory obligations, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) initiatives, best practices and input/assessments from third party experts; make recommendations and implement improvements.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate safety policies, programs and educational resources based on the requirements of the organization, legislation and best practice.
  • Act as a primary resource to HSN's Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) or Health and Safety Representatives; assist, research and provide information and responses on behalf of the organization.
  • Ensure safety liabilities and issues are identified, reported and managed in accordance with legislation.
  • Develop and maintain tools that stakeholders will utilize to ensure the organization fulfills statutory obligations under the OHSA and requirements defined/conveyed by the MLITSD.
  • Provide all levels of the organization with guidance related to health and safety matters, legislative requirements, and best practices particular to a health care setting.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with all HSN staff in providing advice on safety policies, issues and concerns.
  • Prepare reports and analyze organizational statistics related to injury and illness in the workplace.
  • Conduct and participate in safety audits and hazard/risk assessments; investigate and analyze risk and make recommendations on the implementation of preventative solutions; assist management in providing written followup, gap analysis and recommendations to key stakeholders.
  • Provide direction and support to OHSW staff regarding the follow up on incidents, accidents and events ensuring that they are making linkages to the HSMS; make required recommendations to the Manager.
