Dr.

Hans Frykman at UBC, is recruiting for a postdoctoral research fellow to join his research laboratory located at UBC Hospital, Koerner Pavilion.

Dr.

Frykman's research group focuses on developing and validating state of the art, precise, and accurate diagnostic tools, thereby empowering the decision-making of health practitioners and helping to improve patient outcomes, as well as doing innovative and clinically relevant research on neuroimmunology and neurodegenerative disorders.


Goals of this postdoctoral research fellow is to uncover the novel clinical and translational mechanisms involved in neuroimmunology and neurodegenerative disorders and to pursue additional research in biomarker discovery.

Research into neurological disorders may include myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalitis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders, MOG antibody associated diseases, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and/or traumatic brain injury.

Biomarker platforms and techniques that may be utilized include, though are not limited to, cell-based assays (indirect immunofluorescence), immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, surface plasmon resonance (Biacore and/or Sierra SPR Technology), and Simoa technology (Quanterix).

Work Performed

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Research design and implementation to elucidate mechanisms underlying neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and discuss results to laboratory meetings
  • Periodic presentations at scientific conferences
  • Grant and manuscript writing
  • Work in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment
  • Assist with the routine operation and management of the laboratory
Supervision Received

Postdoctoral fellow will report to Dr. Hans Frykman/Dr.
Pankaj Kumar, Research Associate and work with Ms. Anna Cruz, Research technician on day-to-day basis.

The fellow must be highly self-directed, taking initiative and working independently under the general direction of the PI and as part of a project team with the Scientist and/or technicians.

Consequences of Error/Judgement

All activities must adhere to the highest standards of excellence and ethics.

The fellow should exercise a considerable amount of judgement, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating lab work.

The Postdoc is directly responsible for

errors and should correct them as they arise. Consequences of error/judgement could reduce the

quality of research conducted in the lab and reflect negatively on all the researchers involved.


Qualifications:


  • Recent PhD graduate in Microbiology and Immunology or a related discipline
  • Applicants need to have had previous hands on laboratory experience with basic immunological techniques (aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, ELISAs, etc.)
  • Applicants must be proficient in statistical analysis using programs such as R, SPSS, and/or GraphPad Prism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint is required
  • Assay development experience is an asset
