Description

The Ministry of the Attorney General, Office of Legislative Counsel, requires an experienced individual to revise French versions of bills and regulations.

The Office of Legislative Counsel is the government's central drafting office for bills, regulations, proclamations, and motions. The Office of Legislative Counsel also provides drafting services for Members of the Provincial Parliament and on private bills. The Office of Legislative Counsel prepares both English and, through its French Legislative Services, French versions of laws.

What can I expect to do in this role?: In this role, you will:

  • Work closely with, and coordinate the work of, lawyers, revisers and translators to ensure accuracy, uniform style and quality of legislative texts produced in French for the Legislature and the Government
  • Establish a quality standard for the French language used for legislative purposes in Ontario
  • Provide authoritative advice/leadership and act as resource to the program establishing Frenchlanguage terminology reflecting common law
  • Develop and coordinate preparation of lexicons and translation standards

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:
You must possess oral and written French language skills at the superior level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.


Technical Skills:


  • You can translate and revise statutes, bills and regulations from English to French
  • You have knowledge of translation and revision practices, principles and conventions to select precise language and appropriate style and advise translators and counsel
  • You have expertise in French grammar, style, and legal and technical (i.e. financial) terminology

Oral, Written Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You have written communication skills in French and English, including vocabulary, legal and technical terminology, grammar and sentence structure, to evaluate, review, edit and translate statutes, bills and regulations
  • You have written and verbal communication skills in French and English to provide guidance and leadership to translators, legal counsel and clients
  • You have interpersonal skills to reach a consensus within the translation team and obtain clarification from clients and address their concerns

Research, Analytical and Evaluative Skills:


  • You have research skills to verify and ensure that meaning and intent are maintained
  • You have analytical and evaluative skills to revise and translate documents from English to French by maintaining and preserving intent and meaning
  • You have evaluative skills to ensure consistent language in all statutes, bills and regulations

Reasoning and Problem Solving Skills:


  • You have reasoning and problem solving skills to interpret ambiguous language or meaning and propose solutions
  • You have reasoning and problem solving skills to assess workload demand and determine priorities
  • You have problem solving skills to lead a team in a highpressured environment involving tight deadlines

Planning and Coordination Skills:


  • You have the necessary planning and coordination skills to coordinate translators', lawyers' and editors' workloads and schedules and set priorities in order to meet deadlines
  • You have the necessary planning and coordination skills to coordinate several concurrent projects and deadlines
