The Position


The Health and Safety Advisor (HSA) acts collaboratively with all RainCity Housing programs, developing, leading and promoting health and safety initiatives in alignment to the organization's mission and values, legislative standards and collective agreement provisions.

Reporting to the Director Human Resources, the HSA ensures their client-specific needs are considered in the design and implementation of health and safety programs.

The HSA manages the organization's health and safety program and violence prevention program, and acts as a resource providing consultation, guidance, and support on health and safety issues to the Senior Leadership team, program managers, Human Resources team, and front-line employees.

The HSA promotes a culture of safety at RainCity Housing to eliminate occupational injuries and illness.

This position trains managers and staff on safety practices, participates in and conducts inspections and audits, addresses safety concerns, and develops safe working procedures.

Position Accountabilities

  • Works with the Director, Human Resources & Labour Relations and key stakeholders to create, develop and implement effective organizationwide occupational health and safety initiatives, policies, procedures and processes. Completes independent projects within the scope of the role to implement safe operations practices and be compliant with relevant legislation
  • Acts as a direct resource to the Senior Leadership Team and Program Managers in areas of occupational health and safety. Develops collaborative relationships with the leadership teams as a trusted advisor.
  • Plays a lead role in achieving and maintaining compliance of Occupational Health and Safety across RainCity Housing, in accordance with WorkSafe BC, BC Worker's Compensation Act, and OHS Regulation standards.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains a functioning health and safety program and Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee at each worksite in accordance with the Workers Compensation Act and Regulation; advises committee for compliance.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains the violence program. oversees the completion of Violence Risk Assessments, Critical Incident Reports, workplace inspections, incident investigation, safety surveys and reports.
  • Manages the collection, followup, tracking, and record keeping of incident investigations, corrective action plans, as well as plays a lead role in responding to compliance orders and reports.
  • Reviews current mechanism for data collection and makes recommendation for improved data collection initiatives in collaboration with the Knowledge Exchange Specialist.
  • Collects health and safety data through reports, site visits, and audits. Leads seniorlevel meetings to present data analysis and make recommendations of action plans to address safety gaps.
  • Provides training to staff and managers on health and safety awareness, processes, policies and procedures, and best practices.
  • Conducts onsite visits to projects and programs to connect with staff and managers on safety concerns.
  • Cultivates positive relations with WorkSafeBC representatives and other external agencies. Embodies RainCity's value models and represent its best interests when interchanging with third parties and influencing change.
  • Demonstrated antiracism knowledge and skills to support racialized communities, including knowledge of Canada's historical and ongoing colonialism and its impact on Indigenous peoples.
