SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion project.

This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey's Bay operation until at least 2032.

We are interested in receiving resumes for Underground Construction Manager.

This is a site project term position on a 2 week in 2 week out rotation, with 12 hour long shifts.

The site is accessed via air from designated pick-up points in Newfoundland and Labrador.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strong personal commitment to and knowledge of Underground Mining Safety and Quality.
  • Commitment to taking responsibility for the Underground job functions and to looking beyond job function and tasks to influence others in the specific behaviors required in the underground environment.
  • Ability to work and communicate positively within a teambased environment to ensure all deliverables are in conformance with engineering codes, standards, quality, schedule and budgetary restraints.
  • Responsible for Safety, Health and Environment in the underground works areas.
  • Champion health, safety, and a zeroaccident culture in the underground areas, while being proactive with contractors to promote a safe and hazard free work.
  • Participate in all safety associated activities with the underground development and infrastructure construction, corrective action notices, audits, accident/incident investigations reporting, job analysis, safety meetings etc.
  • Coordinates with project director, contractor leaders, design engineers, procurement, planning and scheduling and other personnel in setting and maintaining priorities to ensure timely performance sufficient to keep the underground works on schedule and within budget.
  • Manage the onsite contractors to ensure project field procedures within the underground works execution plan, including scheduling, planning, quality management, and performance management, have been established.
  • Review the underground mine works daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports submitted by the contractors to ensure that safety, quality, schedule, design and specification requirements are achieved or exceeded.
  • Ensure adherence to all local, organizational and statutory requirements affecting the project site and underground mine workings.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-Secondary education in the field of underground mining construction, and/or civil engineering is preferred; a combination of equivalent education and experience is also acceptable.
  • Underground mining experience is required.
  • Previous management experience on a major construction project.
  • Exemplary knowledge of underground mining methods, blasting, ventilation and mine services.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem solving, negotiation and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate directly with senior management.
  • Extensive knowledge of all phases of mining and construction operations related to field activities of all engineering disciplines, construction and maintenance practices, procedures and techniques and applicable codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement and Lean Management principles.
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of an Integrated Team as well as independently.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, U/G mine rescue, WHMIS and Loss Control Principles.
  • Proven track record in personal safety and housekeeping practices.
