Work Arrangements

  • This contract fulltime position is available from August 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024. This position is required to work a flexible schedule based on operational needs. Shift days and times may change depending on operational needs. Evening and weekend work will be required. The position is located primarily at the New Westminster campus and will be required to work at all Douglas College campuses and offsite locations.

The Role

  • Reporting to the Manager, Athletics & Recreation Operations, the Athletics Communications Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the communications strategies for Athletics, Recreation, and Sports Institute. The coordinator contributes to a studentcentered environment that enhances the profile of studentathletes, coaches and the Athletics & Recreation department by effectively delivering key messages through writing, designing and producing media content for the web, social media, and print publications.
    Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities Include:


Communications

  • Executes the department's communication strategies and provides feedback/recommendations on strategy & tactics
  • Develops and writes brand messaging for all communications and marketing initiatives and channels
  • Writes, edits and maintains content for web, social media and print. e.g. Press releases, news articles, etc.
  • Coordinates student writers, photographers, graphic designers by providing guidance and information on project related tasks. e.g. feature stories, photo shoots, etc.
  • Responds to media inquiries and asset requests as the primary point of contact for Athletics and Recreation e.g. photographs, images, and logos

Design and Production (print, web, video)

  • Responsible for the visual execution of brand campaigns
  • Responsible for ensuring all brand collateral (posters, templates, tshirts, videos, calendar, signage, etc) are in alignment with brand guidelines
  • Responsible for the creation, update, and maintenance of Department websites
  • Generates photographs as needed
  • Recommends and provides budget proposals for various projects and events

Marketing

  • Supports and executes new marketing initiatives
  • Ensures brand touchpoints align with overall brand strategy
  • Supports media initiatives and asset creation related to revenue generating opportunities for Athletics and Sports Institute

Special Events Supports

  • Contributes to the development of special event strategies, e.g. Departmental, Conference, Athletics Championships
  • Supports event planning, execution and delivery
  • Coordinates the delivery of technology for departmental operations (e.g. web streaming, media, presentations)
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of collateral materials for all hosted events (signage, media guide, poster, logo, video, website)

Administrative

  • Maintains appropriate documentation and records of the media related to studentathletes, i.e. headshots, statistics, etc.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Athletics & Recreation Operations, communicates with coaches, and faculty (as directed), regarding information pertaining to student communication, media, branding requirements
  • Attend departmental meetings

Perform other Duties

  • Research emerging and innovative communications, media and branding technology, initiatives and strategies in postsecondary Athletics

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Completion of a twoyear diploma from a recognized postsecondary institution in a relevant field such as journalism, communications, marketing; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (degree preferred)
  • Three years' experience providing communications, marketing, or public relations support to an athletics department or comparable college/university setting
  • Experience in conceptualizing, planning and developing a wide variety of communications including special projects, graphics, content features, and interactive elements
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Figma, Office 365 suite, website and database management
  • Demonstrated understanding of communication and marketing fundamentals and tactics
  • Current knowledge of digital trends and developments, social media analytics, and social listening and networking
  • Experience working with student groups at the postsecondary level. Experience leading, developing and facilitating student groups is considered an asset
  • Ability to explain and highlight the connections between physical activity, physical
