Accessibility Facilitator


The Accessibility Facilitator is responsible for providing live-streaming support in the classroom for students who require virtualization and remote access to course content, classroom support for students with physical, mobility, and medical disabilities, and support for students with vision loss.

The Accessibility Facilitator attends in-person classes and uses a computer, camera, microphone, and streaming platform (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) to stream course content to students who are at an off-campus location (e.g., their home).

The incumbent must be proficient in streaming technology such as laptops, cameras, microphones, and streaming platforms (Zoom, MS teams, etc.).

The Accessibility Facilitator may be required to record lectures, in addition to live streaming, where appropriate and where approval has been given.

The Accessibility Facilitator is responsible for providing direct support for students with physical and mobility disabilities including set up of course materials, assistance with accessing technology in class, and pack up of course materials at the conclusion of class.

The Accessibility Facilitator provides direct, in class support for students with vision loss to access course content and technology.


Responsibilities:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

Virtual Streaming

  • Provides inclass live streaming support for students who have a virtual/remote learning accommodation.
  • Works with ALS staff to acquire a laptop, microphone, and camera
  • Ensures Zoom and/or Microsoft Teams accounts employee accounts are active
  • Sets up the appropriate streaming links in Zoom or Teams and sends to student
  • Works with student to establish preferred way to engage in reciprocal communication with professors and/or peers during lectures or group work
  • Attends all scheduled classes for a student with virtual/remote accommodations
  • Introduces themselves to the course professor and works with professor to determine best classroom location to provide streaming support to the student
  • Checks in with student during lecture and after lecture to assess effectiveness of streaming feed (e.g., student's ability to hear lecture, view content)
  • Facilitates interaction and reciprocal communication during group work/group activities during class or outside of class
  • Reviews My Canvas course information for their assigned course(s) as ALS staff will set Virtual Assistant up as an observer in My Canvas

Virtual Assistant Preparation

  • Meet with ALS Technician to review technology required for virtual streaming including laptop, camera, microphone
  • Review tutorials/guides related to effective use of camera and microphone in class
  • Review My Canvas course content in preparation for assignment
  • Where required, meet with student prior to assignment for introduction and review of course needs
  • Where required, meet with ALS staff, including Accessibility Counsellor, to review specific student needs as they relate to virtual streaming

Classroom Accessibility Support

  • Provides set up and take down support for students with mobility and physical challenges including access to ergonomic furniture
  • Meets with students in class to support set up of technology including laptops and software programs and/or removing textbooks from bags, setting up laptop, and/or other notetaking material
  • For students who are blind or who have low vision, provides visual supports to course content including software and course materials including textbooks, PowerPoints, handouts, and My Canvas access.
  • Offers student tools and strategies for organizing academic work in consultation with ALS staff for resources and supports.
  • Takes brief notes inclass to document and share any important information (e.g., test and assignment dates, reminders, class schedule information including changes to class schedule)
  • Provides support for extended classroom activities which may include class field trips, experiential learning opportunities, and at partner campus locations.
