JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the LPN and the Director of Care, The Health Care Aide assists residents with those activities of daily living that they are unable to perform themselves without help, fostering at all times the residents' independence and freedom of choice.
Responsibilities:
Activities of Daily Living:
Provides assistance with:
a. Dressing and undressing
b. Bathing
c. Personal hygiene
d. Mobility devices i.e. cane, walker, wheelchair
e. Safe transfer and ambulation
f. Meals - food preparation on plate when required
Activities of Daily Living (housekeeping, recreation and escorting):
Provides assistance with:
a. Laundry
b. Bathroom clean-up in case of unexpected incontinence
c. Bedmaking as required in case of unexpected events
d. Escorting to meals and recreational activities when required
e. Serving of meals as required
Medication Assistance and Delegations:
Fulfills delegated tasks as per the task sheet
This includes:
a. Administering medications
b. Monitoring blood sugars
c. Performing minor dressing changes
e. Assisting with AM and PM care
f. Assisting with bathing
g. Assisting with meals
e. Escorting to meals
f. Monitors correctness of medications administration
g. Documents medication administration
h. Documents all tasks, incidents as well as client progress

Fulfils any other delegated task within the scope of practice of the Health Care Aide as requested by the LPN.
Leadership:
a. Plans daily tasks in collaboration with colleagues
b. Works effectively on a team
c. Acts as advocate for residents
d. Follows up on and communicates with staff and residents or families any concerns that arise
e. Communicates effectively with Case Managers
f. Communicates effectively with team members, staff and other health care professionals
g. Facilitates recreational groups for residents who have dementia
h. Participates in monthly progress meetings with Case Managers and other health care professionals if needed.
Qualifications:
- Must be certified as a Health Care Aide or have equivalent certification from an accredited institution.
- Must demonstrate a good understanding of the aging process and the heritage and values of the residents living in Emmanuel Home.
- Must be willing to participate in staff meetings as scheduled.
- Must be willing to participate in educational opportunities as they arise.
- Must have good judgment in emergency situations and be able to communicate effectively in unexpected and emotionally charged situations.
- Must have good interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to work flexible hours as required by:
a. Being available for day, evening or night shifts
b. Adapting to changes in the workload due to fluctuations in care needs of residents.
- Must strictly adhere to the scope of practice of the Health Care Aide.
- Must be able to walk between 5-7 km in a 6 hour shift.
Position: Competitive salary commensurate with experience; casual position
