The opportunity:


The Manager, Finance and Administration in the Faculty of Education is a senior administrative position that reports to the Dean of Education and provides overall guidance and direction on all Finance, Human Resources, Administrative and Facilities matters for the faculty.

In this capacity, the position independently coordinates and directs many diverse funding areas in order to project financial commitments for the faculty budget, facilitate contract administration, and develop financial objectives in consultation with the Dean.

This position plays an integral role in the development of the Strategic Resource Plan, providing advice to the Dean.


The incumbent is responsible for the financial oversight and administration in the faculty, including ensuring compliance with University Policy and adhering to appropriate internal controls.

The incumbent provides oversight of support staff and provides guidance on academic staff HR processes. The incumbent also provides important administrative/financial expertise to new initiatives and continuing projects.

The position is responsible for the facilities of the faculty, including overseeing space and office assignments, prioritizing and providing direction on construction and renovation projects as well as maintenance and security issues.

This position provides guidance to Associate Deans and Department Heads to ensure compliance on all HR, Finance and Facility concerns and serves as the primary liaison with University Administration on all these areas.


The qualifications and experience we're looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree in business, management or related discipline required.
  • CPA designation in good standing is required.
  • Masters degree would be an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years directly related experience in a senior financial role is required.
  • High level of knowledge in the area of financial management and financial planning/budgeting is required.
  • Significant experience in developing and maintaining budgets is required.
  • Previous experience in Human Resource management and demonstrated ability to deal with sensitivity to many personnel issues is required.
  • Experience interpreting and implementing policy at a large organization is required.
  • Experience in Facilities Management would be an asset.
  • Experience managing in a Unionized environment would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of UM Policy and Procedures would be an asset.
  • Experience working in an academic environment would be an asset
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Leadership, interpersonal, organizational, management and change management skills is required.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and deal effectively and respectfully with all levels of staff, as well as external partners.
  • Must be able to understand the link between financial planning and operations.
  • Financial accounting, critical thinking and strategic thinking skills are essential.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Ability selfmotivate and work independently is essential
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is essential.
  • A high level of integrity and enthusiasm for the academic mission of the Faculty are important.
  • Knowledge of managing IT resources would be an asset.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
