    Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.

    The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer.     About The Role

    Schedule: 14 days in, 14 days off - 12 hour days

    Position Reports To: Capital Projects Manager

    Position Overview

    The Tailings Dam Engineer (TDE) will be responsible for ensuring the Rainy River Mine is operating above industry best practices, while being a subject matter expert on all regulatory requirements that relates to tailings dams. The incumbent will strive for continuous improvement leading with integrity, creativity, innovation, and teamwork.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Instrumentation Mentor and provide guidance for the Tailings Dam Technicians Implementation and management of the geotechnical database Manage all instrumentation infrastructure and data for the Rainy River Mine and provide quality assurance on data acquisition Develop risk assessment procedures based on instrumentation performance that recommend actions to maintain the sustainability of operations and safety
  • Inspections & Reporting Subject matter expert on the Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance (OMS) Manual Monthly, and annual instrumentation/construction reporting of tailings and water diversion structures Conduct and report on monthly inspections of all tailings dams and water diversion structures Manage the Action Log for previous and future Dam Safety Inspections and Dam Safety Reviews
  • Design Review and perform design analyses, including stability and seepage analyses Preparation of technical deliverables such as proposals and reports Input and review of the Tailings Deposition Plan and Water Balance Models
  • Internal Tailings Review Board (ITRB) Act as the New Gold - Rainy River Mine liaison for the ITRB Manage the Action Log for previous and future ITRB meetings
  • Other Work closely with New Gold Capital Projects, Mine Operations, Environmental, and Mill Work closely with design consultants and the Engineer of Record (EOR) Ensure the company's operation is operating within accordance to the Mining Association of Canada Guidelines (MAC) Subject matter expert on CDA Dam Safety Guidelines Work on continuous improvement for Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Champion moving the operation to obtain AAA status with MAC guidelines
  • Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • P. Eng. designation is required
  • At least 5 years' experience in dam and storage projects, preferably in an operational environment
  • Knowledge of Dam Industry guidelines
  • Experience in investigation and construction phase services
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Team player with good organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently in various environments when required
  • Working Conditions

  • Split time between office and field (driving and walking)
  • Occasional moderate lifting is required (50 lbs)
  • Team environment, with regularly scheduled and ad hoc meetings
