Mission


Reporting to the Director, Systems Integration, the System Safety Officer is responsible for the overall safety of the project's infrastructure and be responsible for the delivery of all aspects of safety management and system assurance for the project's infrastructure, including safety assessment, RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety) and SIL (Safety Integrity Level).


Role and responsibilities

  • Ensure that the project's Safety Management System provides safety governance and that the project is at all times in compliance with its Safety Management System
  • Be accountable for the extent to which the Project Safety Requirements are met
  • As needed, designate project staff members to develop and implement processes required as part of the project's Safety Management System
  • Establish the project's own internal safety governance structure, processes and committees and document such structures, processes, and committees for the project's Safety Management System
  • Responsible for the delivery of all aspects of safety management and system assurance, including safety assessment, RAMS and SIL
  • Responsible for the overall safety of the Works and be project's contact for all communications with the Chief Safety Officer, Contracting Authority, other project's System Safety Officers, the ISA (Independent Safety Assessor) and Contracting Authority ISA, and others on safety matters related to the Works.
  • Support the Chief Safety Officer in the overall safety certification of the project

Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor's engineering degree or other relevant training


Years of experience:
Minimum 10 years of professional experience in an equivalent position


Technical competencies:


  • Have extensive experience in the field of system safety, applied in a metro type rail transit environment.
  • Detailed knowledge of system life cycle, security design principles and risk analysis
  • Knowledge of complex systems of security engineering and in real time, including architecture of systems, hardware and software
  • Knowledge of RAM methodological risk management tools such as failure rate prediction, Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD), Markov models, Monte Carlo methods, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Good knowledge of CENELEC Standards: EN 50126, 50128 and 50129 as well as MIL-HDBK217 standards and local law.
  • Be a PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario) licensed holder, or eligible to become one, an asset.
  • Excellent command of the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Fluency in English (spoken, read and written).
  • Fluency in French (spoken, read and written), an asset.
