Manager, Community Real Estate Analyst

We are launching a bold new strategy that deepens our place-based work with the goal of scaling our community innovation and investing in community owned real estate, ensuring that people have access to the supports they need close to home.


Reporting to the Director, Community Real Estate, the Manager, Community Real Estate Analyst is responsible to support United Way Greater Toronto's vision for a UWGT powered community real-estate initiative aimed at improving the strength and sustainability of community service organizations by: providing financial analysis and advice on the viability of projects as part of grant-making and investment decisions; offering support and advice to sector and partnership initiatives to build capacity and create successful opportunities for community-owned space or partnerships with the public sector for neighbourhoods and communities living in poverty.


What you'll do:


_Project Analysis _

  • Provide a thorough analysis of project financials, proformas, business and operational plans, capital budgets, and capacity of project leads to deliver
  • Review projects with an eye to their eligibility for granting and other opportunities
  • Provide advice to projects and internal colleagues on 'readiness' for partners to work with United Way and other nonprofit funders or private financing
  • Support the Community Real Estate & Capital Grants Director in preparing reports and recommendations around project viability and project concepts as well as any associated risks

_Portfolio Oversight & Granting_

  • Have an understanding of the variety of capital funding sources and programs typically associated with nonprofit capital projects
  • Inform and support the rollout of United Way's capital granting processes including risk mitigation and appropriate fund oversight (i.e., approvals process and project milestones)
  • Monitor a portfolio of funded capital projects and execution of funding contracts
  • Support ongoing project stewardship for funded projects working collaboratively with other colleagues and teams

_Capacity Building_

  • Provide guidance to a network of nonprofit community partners at various stages of project development
  • Support internal colleagues and community partner capacity related to community real estate projects with an eye to surfacing opportunities, risks, implications, and any special considerations related to projects that involve a mix of partners (such as Community Hubs)
  • Work closely with academic partners and other colleagues and advisors to develop and evaluate capacity building activities including support to workshops and other activities
  • Work alongside a network of skilled volunteers to support mentorship initiatives across public, nonprofit, and private sectors as part of a capacity building ladder.
  • Help to strengthen the skills of a diverse range of nonprofit partners (emerging and established, equityled/equitydeserving, land trusts, social service agency, and those with more limited development experience and expertise).

_Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Represent UWGT and participate in appropriate external tables around community real estate and liaise with a mix of key stakeholders
  • Support Director, Community Real Estate and Capital Projects with establishing partnerships and memoranda of understandings

  • Work with crossfunctional teams to ensure UWGT's priorities and goals are achieved including but not limited to Neighbourhoods team, Strategic Initiatives, team, Corporate Donor Relations, and Product Development (donor engagement), Research, Public Policy & Evaluation (evaluation and neighbourhood profiles), Communications & Public Affairs (media and stories
  • Ensuring accurate reporting and financial accountability of United Way investments
