    A Day in the Life...

    Reporting to the Manager, Content & Communications the incumbent will support the priority communication needs of the assigned portfolio(s). The Communications Specialist assists in communicating key initiatives and stories while also providing communications support to the Marketing team as required. Main responsibilities include planning and executing media relations, supporting the University's appeal in attracting and retaining students and supporting Brock's reputation and overall media presence.

    As theCommunications Specialist you will:

    • Develop content for a broad range of communications and marketing materials across multiple platforms and channels, (including but not limited to: The Brock News, social media, posters, brochures, videos, etc.);
    • Brainstorm, research, source and write strong, impactful and clear releases, advisories, op-eds and pitches for external media following Canadian Press style to attract news coverage and raise the University's profile;
    • Deliver a consistent and cohesive brand experience across all content;
    • Respond promptly to news media inquiries that seek expert sources or information that can promote the University's reputation in the public eye;
    • Steward a network of news, media and industry contacts, and establish a reputation for pitching stories with journalistic integrity and appeal;
    • Develop strong networks with researchers to stay familiar with ongoing research activity in order to identify and relate important stories that showcase the capacities and achievements of the portfolio and the University;
    • Strategically use media monitoring knowledge to identify opportunities for further outreach to enhance the profile of Brock experts and representatives.
    • Take still photographs in accordance with Brock's brand standards in support of a variety of projects (including Brock News stories, social media, print materials, websites, etc.);
    • Assist in the production of strategic brand video content (storyboarding, interviewing subjects, script writing, etc.);
    • Assist in preparing speaking notes or other materials for events;
    • Play an active role in executing any duties assigned during an emergency or when the University's Emergency Operations Centre is activated.

    What you need to Succeed...

    • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (i.e., Communications, Marketing Research, Journalism, or Public Relations);
    • A minimum of two years of news media or media relations work experience, preferably in a non-profit environment;
    • Excellent written, oral and editing skills in narrative and/or media styles;
    • Ability to produce substantive editorial documents such as annual reports;
    • Sound knowledge of publishing and digital content processes;
    • Working competence in editorial-style photography and videography, and in distributing that imagery on websites, through social media and with medial releases;
    • Solid computer application skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word Processing, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe, Acrobat, Photo Shop, web applications, and social media platforms);
    • Strong presentation skills with the ability to clearly articulate concepts, messages and narratives;
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to multi-task in order to meet deadlines;
    • Ability to understand research-specific terminology and communicate research in layman's terms to the general public and industry stakeholders;
    • Extremely adaptable, flexible, nimble, and responsive to meet changing demands and conflicting priorities;
    • Highly creative and passionate when designing, delivering, and promoting all marketing and communication materials.

    Preferred or Asset Skills...

    • A graduate degree in public relations, marketing or communications.

    Salary and Benefit Information

    • Job Grade (K), Salary Scale ($57,-$98,)*;
    • Target Hiring Range: $57,-70,
    • This position includes full comprehensive benefits including tuition waiver.

    *The salary range indicated is representative of all positions evaluated at this level. Actual salary is determined by assessing related skills, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness, subject to available budget.
