The County of Wetaskiwin is looking for an experienced Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) who shares the vision of teamwork, respect, honesty and commitment, to lead a team of dedicated, professional and committed co-workers in a fast-paced, ever changing environment.


The CAO will be an exceptional communicator, politically astute and have a proven record of organizational, administrative, financial and change management experience.


The Position:


As the CAO, you will manage day to day operations, provide strategic leadership, and work with elected officials and community stakeholders to promote sustainable growth and enhance the quality of life for our residents.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop and implement strategies and initiatives to improve the performance of the County.
  • Work closely with the senior management team to ensure the overall success of the County.
  • Ensuring the alignment of departmental business plans and operations to Council's Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee the budget development process, and financial projections to support all departments.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • Develop and implement directives and procedures to ensure the highest levels of efficiency and effectiveness in Levels of Service.
  • Ensure that all staff are trained, motivated and supported by appropriate resources.
  • Monitor and control municipal spending within the budgets established by Council.
  • Attend all meetings of Council and Committees of Council and meetings of such Boards, Authorities and other bodies as are required by Council.
  • Ensure the actual revenues and expenditures of the municipality compared with the estimates in the operating or capital budget approved by Council are reported to Council as often as Council directs.

Desired Skill Sets and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration or related field is an asset.
  • Society of Local Government Managers Certification and/or NACLAA Level 2 is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of municipal government, including financial management, governance and operations or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and problemsolving skills.
  • Experience in strategic planning, succession planning and team management.
