Role Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Business Coordinator, Special Cases and Accommodations, the Special Cases Officer works within a shared services environment to support the administration of provincial assessments by providing timely information and inquiry services to Albertans.


The Special Cases Officer provides program advice, clarification, and interpretation related to the administration of provincial assessments, accommodations for provincial assessments, exemptions from diploma exams, and Provincial Writing Centers.

Within the context of Alberta's provincial assessment programs (Diploma Examination Programs, Provincial Achievement Testing Program, and Student Learning Assessments) in the kindergarten to Grade 12 education system, the Special Cases Officer ensures that all clients, including school and school authority administrators, teachers, parents, students, and Alberta Education staff:

  • Gain access to accurate and quality information, including recommended approaches to address and/or resolve challenges; and explained policies and processes.


The Special Cases Officer operates within a framework of established legislation, the provincial assessment directive, policies, business rules and processes in the provision of information, guidance and advice, interpretation, analysis, and decision-making.

Services are provided in accordance with Alberta Education Business Plan goals and objectives.

  • Accommodations for students with special diploma exam and Provincial Achievement test writing needs.
  • Special format materials.
  • Exemptions from writing diploma exams.
  • Special Writing Centers.
  • Provincial Writing Centers.
  • Granting of credits.
  • Other special consideration/dispensation, including unusual and exceptional circumstances involving students.

Roles & Responsibilities Continued:


The Special Cases Officer responds to inquiries from students, parents, teachers, administrators, principals, superintendents and professional practitioners regarding provincial assessment directive, policy, and rule interpretation relevant to all facets of student evaluation at the provincial level.


The nature of these inquiries typically focus on:

  • Problem solving to determine the best way to approach a particular issue and resolve it within the parameters of the provincial assessment directive, policies and business rules.
  • Interpretation of policies and rules and providing counselling and information with respect to the specific inquiry.
The Special Cases Officer performs administrative tasks in their day-to-day work, such as:

  • Demonstrated awareness of all existing regulatory requirements and the obligation to maintain mínimal regulatory requirements when interacting with stakeholders.
  • File and record management.
  • Recommending policy and process changes.
  • Maintaining policy manuals and supporting documents in effective working order.
  • Providing input to meetings.
  • Collaborating within the team and across departmental teams on system approaches, rules and processes.
The Special Cases Officer is able to provide advice to senior-level staff to continuously evolve large-scale assessment policies and practices by:

  • Researching best practices regarding the provision of accommodations to learners for the purposes of examination and the reasons for exemption from writing diploma exams.
  • Conducting environmental scans of other leading jurisdictions in regard to policies guiding the administration of largescale assessments.

Qualifications:


Requirements:


  • Twoyear diploma in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

The following knowledge or experiences will be considered as assets:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Education Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP), ECS to Grade 12: Guide to Education, and any other related Acts and relevant Regulations.
