This position is based on site at the NWR Sturgeon Refinery working a 9/80 schedule.

Position Summary:


Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Manager - Operations Finance serves as the financial business partner to the refinery operations, maintenance, reliability and supply chain management teams.

This role ensures that day-to-day operational decisions are grounded in strong financial analysis, supports cost optimization and drives financial discipline across the site.


The Manager – Operations Finance is accountable for the supervision and coordination of production and marketing accounting, accounts receivable and payable, and operating cost accounting functions.

The Manager - Operations Finance is a key member of the North West Redwater (NWR) Finance and Information Systems Group.


Responsibilities:

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A):
Leads budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning;
Works closely with operations, maintenance and engineering leaders to evaluate financial impacts of operational decisions;
Supports production and operational reporting with meaningful cost insights and variance explanations, and translates operational data into financial outcomes;
Analyzes and identifies cost-reduction opportunities across all operational departments and contractor services;

Production Accounting:
Oversees the production accounting process for refinery site operations;
Reviews the balancing and reconciling of volumes, mass balance and product purchases and sales reporting;
Oversees the completion of accurate and timely tax compliance and remittances;

Reporting & Compliance:
Supervises the monthly, quarterly and annual management reporting process and performance dashboards;
Ensures compliance with internal controls, accounting standards and corporate policies;
Coordinates month-end deadlines with all involved parties to achieve the established close deadline;
Supports internal and external audits related to site operations as required;

Capital Project Support:
Responsible for cost-tracking for major events such as turnarounds, shutdowns, and reliability projects;
Tracks capital project spending and ensures alignment with approved budgets;

Cash Management & Forecasting:
Responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to ensure accurate timing of cash inflows and outflows;
Partner with Treasury to optimize cash utilization, and monitor liquidity;
Identify cash-flow risks related to operational events and maintenance activities, feedstock purchases and product sales;
Support initiatives to improve cash utilization and efficiency;

Leadership & Stakeholder Management:
Responsible for the supervision, coaching and mentoring of the production and marketing accounting, accounts payable and receivable, and operating cost teams;
Presents financial insights to leadership, including department managers and senior leadership team, as well as Owners and Tollpayers;
All other duties as assigned.


Requirements:
Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR's Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
Accounting Degree, together with recognized accounting designation (CPA);
10+ years of related experience, ideally in refining or upgrading;
Strong understanding of cost accounting and operational KPIs;
Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills; experience with MS Dynamics, Power BI considered an asset;

Must be a team player:
willing to continuously and proactively collaborate, share, and seek information and guidance;
Must have strong investigative skills and an ability to ask questions to draw out required information;
Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders;
Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to influence operational decisions;
Must be self-confident enough to seek assistance with difficult or complex issues.

This is a full-time position, however due to the nature of this role, requires flexibility including the ability to work extended hours during peak times and occasional evenings and weekends when required.
