Your Opportunity:


The Laboratory Surveillance Officer offers an exciting opportunity for providing leadership and advanced support for the surveillance activities required to support public health and the public health laboratory within the province of Alberta.

Key aspects include working both independently and in a team environment with key internal stakeholders and public health stakeholder, Alberta Health, to assess needs, complete testing and validation for laboratory surveillance using large data sets and data visualization software.

The surveillance officer utilizes Tableau, surveillance and laboratory information collection, collation and interpretation to support the surveillance requirements for public health.

The Laboratory Surveillance officer is responsible and accountable for development of laboratory-based surveillance tools to facilitate information manipulation and management for public health.

Development of detailed interpretation algorithms of clinical public health significance. Assessing ongoing process improvement, modifications and requests to ensure usability and integrity of data to increase functionality. Project leadership for new initiatives in public health surveillance. Producing manuscripts, peer-reviewed materials and presentations utilizing the scientific process and literature review.

As a Laboratory Scientist I, you will perform work involving laboratory processes including research and development, test method implementation and change, routine testing as well as clinical trials.

In addition, you will collect background information including literature reviews, analyze data, and prepare research proposals and summary reports.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science or Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma. Advanced computer training in Microsoft Excel, data bases, and statistical analysis and software. Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. Understanding of research methods and operation. Experiencing collecting, maintaining, compiling, synthesizing, interpreting, analyzing and reporting primary and secondary data.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in a health or science related field. Minimum of three years' experience in a public health-related field.

Proficiency in organizing and manipulating data and creating new datasets from existing data sources for analysis and reporting using a variety of sophisticated tools and approaches including accessing large datasets, use of statistical software such as SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS, STATA or R.

Experience writing scientific manuscripts and with statistical modeling.
