We are a non-profit society offering long-term care services and dementia care for 76 residents. We also provide 23 one bedroom apartments for independently living tenants.

Casual Care Aide Job Summary:


Assists residents with the activities of daily living, including personal, social, spiritual, physical, recreational and environmental needs in accordance with the Spirituality, Mission and Values of Columbus Residence.

Assists in care planning and documentation. Assists family members, visitors and volunteers as required.

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Director of Care and Care Coordinator and in their absence the Nurse in charge of the facility.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Understands, supports and implements the philosophy, mission and policies of COLUMBUS RESIDENCE.
  • Assists and works with all residents from all floors, as needed.
  • Directs and assists residents with all activities of daily living including bathing, washing, bowel and bladder care, dressing, and caring for teeth, hair, nails, skin, foot care, range of motion exercises, etc.
  • Provides residents with comfort measures such as hand, foot and back massages as needed.
  • Assists residents with movement both in and outside the facility in a manner which promotes safety and comfort.
  • Uses good body mechanics and lifting techniques at all times. Transfers, porters and ambulates residents within the facility, utilizing mechanical aides such as lifts, wheelchairs, and walkers as outlined in the resident's individual care plan and as per facility policy.
  • Assists in providing residents with adequate nutrition according to individual care plans by feeding, distributing meals and nourishments and by noting and reporting changes in appetites and food preferences. Assists in clearing tables and collecting dishes. Works in a manner which provides the residents with a pleasant dining experience at all meal and nourishment times. Observes residents for signs of any unusual occurrence and inform the nurses immediately (such as choking, sudden change from their usual behaviour).
  • Promotes and assists residents to participate in social, educational, spiritual, and recreational activities. Assists the facility in preparing for and hosting such activities. When directed, participates in recreational activities with the resident (planning and leading in this context is the Recreational person's responsibility).
  • Assists with admissions, discharges and internal transfers. This includes escort duties outside the facility when deemed necessary by the nurse in charge and also care and transfer of a body after death. This may also include packing and relocating resident possessions when so directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Observes and reports any changes in resident's functional and/or cognitive behaviour to the nurse on duty.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, homelike environment in all areas of facility. Works with the residents in maintaining their clothing and room in a tidy, clean condition. Keeps residents' rooms and common areas tidy as required. Assists in preparing rooms for resident admissions.
  • When in place, participates in all aspects of pet care necessary for the pet therapy program at Columbus Residence. (Including ensuring the pet is fed and watered and the pet area and pet litter box is kept clean.) (A doctor's certificate is required for exemption from pet care duties.)
  • Ensures residents' rights of privacy and confidentiality are maintained. Has a good understanding of the two documents, "Columbus Residence Statement of the Rights of each Resident" and "Columbus Residence Statement of the Responsibilities of Each Resident." Always works to ensure these rights and responsibilities are maximally met.
  • Participates in both departmental and multi-disciplinary care planning. Serves on committees and attends meetings as required by a Coordinator.
  • Responsible for the handling of residents' personal laundry and the distribution of house linens as required; ensures proper care and identification of residents' clothing and personal effects.
  • Identifies, communicates and documents, as directed, the residents' needs for assistance with the activities of daily living.
  • Ensures that both resident and facility-owned equipment and designated storage areas are kept clean
