    Position Summary

    The Lead Field Specialist for Pape Station Support of Excavation (SOE) is responsible for monitoring the technical requirements of the work and verifying quantities. Performs construction engineering assignments of a varied nature requiring a full working knowledge of construction engineering practices. Exercises professional judgment within the framework of broad guidelines provided by superiors. May have responsibility to provide direction to less experienced construction engineers, or construction office technical or clerical personnel.

    Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with the project ES&H program as well as monitors the activities of contractors to ensure compliance with project technical requirements.
  • Provides leadership for and creation and ongoing maintenance of a safe workplace and environment as a priority in the delivery of all work.
  • Reviews contractor's documentation including risk assessments, method statements and inspection and test plans. Attends necessary inspections of the works on behalf of Metrolinx. Monitor's the contractor's assurance activities including the resolution of non-conforming items.
  • Assists construction superintendents and contractors in planning construction methods and procedures. Coordinates and resolves engineering or construction problems with superintendents and contractors.
  • Interprets design engineering drawings and may prepare construction working drawings for the use of superintendents and contractors as required, including (1) Temporary construction facilities, (2) Field sketches of revisions and additions and preparing "as built" drawings.
  • Reviews design drawings, related vendor and contractor drawings and installation instructions and studies interference problems. Verifies contractor's commodities on quantity tracking systems or other computer database programs as required.
  • Reviews field change notices/requests, extra work orders and back charge notices. Implements project controls tools on the construction site.
  • Assists in the preparation of cost estimates and reviews project design and engineering bills of materials to ensure their completeness. Prepares and maintains daily reports. Assists in the verification of contractor's applications for payment. Reviews updated contractor schedules, as assigned.
  • Provides input to constructability and lessons learned. May be required to provide input on employee reviews of assigned subordinate personnel. Responsible for the activities of assigned field specialists, such as the application of drawings, specifications, and subcontracts.
  • Qualifications and Skills

    Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university as well Minimum of 10-13 years of relevant work experience, or 14-17 years relevant experience in the absence of a degree (Lead Field Specialist).
  • Additional Qualifications

  • Work experience as a field engineer, engineer, or assistant superintendent.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database.
  • Awareness of environmental compliance laws and requirements.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel's "Zero Accident" safety program.
  • Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
  • Technical knowledge and experience of relevant construction methods and systems including: Heavy Civil earthworks. Temporary Works. Jet Grouting
  • Installation and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation
  • Has knowledge of construction activities as they relate to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the relevant Environmental, Health and Safety regulations as they relate to area of responsibility. Knowledge of project-specific environmental compliance requirements.
