The Role

  • Working independently, the Student Life Coordinator is responsible for the overall management, direction, planning, implementation and supervision of Student Life programs that impact the retention and engagement of Douglas College students. The Student Life Coordinator is also responsible for creating and providing programs for the first year experience, student leadership, volunteer and cocurricular programs that support intellectual, personal, and social development of students. The position works closely with students in promoting engagement and creating a vibrant campus atmosphere and sense of community. Additional responsibilities include safety procedures, scheduling, budget monitoring and marketing/communication for Student Life. Provides exceptional clientcentred service on a consistent basis to all client groups.
    Responsibilities

1. Develops, plans and organizes student engagement activities in support of Student Life
a. plans and designs diverse programs of first year experience, student life, peer programs, evening/weekend activities and special events including the preparation of a semesterly/annual programming;
- b. develops and administers operating budgets for student life activities and special events;
- c. hires and evaluates student staff including providing orientation and ensuring the provision of appropriate training and professional development;
- d. initiates and processes appropriate personnel, payroll, accounting and purchasing documentation;
- e. ensures all program regulations and procedures are followed and recommends changes in procedures and regulations to the Manager.

2. Supervises Student Life activities.
a. liaises with Facilities, and external partners to schedule Student Life activities and programs;
- b. works closely with the Douglas Student Union to ensure a positive atmosphere that contributes to the growth of student clubs and student life.
- c. designs and implements leadership & mentorship programs for individuals/groups;
- d. Initiates, implements and coordinates activities, programs and services that enhance student leadership development;
- e. through activities and programming, creates opportunities for student involvement, personal and professional growth for individuals and for student-driven organizations;
- f. assists in the creation of an environment where the traditional lines between academics and student activities are intentionally merged to enhance and promote the best student experience;
- g. develops and emphasizes partnerships through interdepartmental activities and events; co-sponsor or assist appropriate events and activities sponsored by College offices and departments;
- h. supervises the daily operation of positions under his/her authority; provides input into staff job
- descriptions;
- i. approves staff work schedules and time sheets;
- j. ensures adequate coverage for areas within responsibility, within existing budget parameters.

3. Plans, implements and evaluates marketing for Student Life
a. markets, promotes and is responsible for public relations for Student Life events and programs;
- b. responds to external and internal requests for information;
- c. managing and updating the department website;
- e. produces brochures, posters, media guides as part of an advertising campaign.

Performs other related duties including but not limited to
:

a. assists the Manager of the department when requested;
- b. represents the department at internal and external meetings as requested.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years' experience working in the profession of Student Affairs or Student Life or a related Student Services functional area working with an array of students (in first year experience, student leadership, and/or community service learning initiatives). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent communication skills including a good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal), and a demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups in informal and formal settings.
