Job Summary


UBC's Strategic Plan and Inclusion Action Plan lay out the University's commitment to actively recruit, support, retain, and advance students from historically, persistently, or systemically marginalized communities.

This includes the revision, renewal and replacement of recruitment and admissions processes to actively consider equity issues; reducing financial barriers to studying at UBC, particularly for marginalized students; and supporting mentorship, peer support, extracurricular programming and professional development opportunities that help build inclusive communities.


The Program Manager, Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program, under guidance from the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives, provides leadership in the development, implementation and management for programs aimed at recruiting and retaining Black Students at the UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses.

A new initiative, the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program is a program that will recruit and retain local Black students at the institution with intentional components that mirror existing UBC programs serving diverse student populations.


This position is based in Vancouver and the incumbent collaborates with units across both campuses to lead, develop and implement strategies, administrative systems, policies, practices, procedures and advising delivery models that contribute to the program's goals to recruit and support the success of Black students.

The Program Manager will manage the Program Advisor(s) who will be based in Okanagan and will be responsible for the day-to-day provision for comprehensive wrap-around programs and services to ensure scholars are well supported in meeting the goals associated with their academic degree and overall UBC experience.


The position also establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with Black communities and organizations both on and off campus and develops a strong understanding of and connection to the black student experience at UBC.

In consultation with relevant community members and stakeholders across both campuses, the Program Manager identifies the systemic barriers and works in consultation with the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives to advocate for institutional changes and reforms for a successful student experience of all Black students.

Organizational Status

The Program Manager reports to and works under the direction of the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives.

The Program Manager liaises and works collaboratively with staff, and colleagues in the Vice President Students Portfolio, Enrolment Services, Student Recruitment and Advising, Admissions, Residence and Housing, Directors and Unit Heads of departments and schools, and Faculty Academic Advising Offices across both campuses.

Based on an expert understanding of the Black student experience in higher education and in Canada, the Program Manager maintains collegial and functional relationships with Black communities and organizations, both on and off campus, including, but not limited other educational organizations, educational institutions, not-for-profit organizations and government agencies at the local, regional, provincial, national, and, at times, the international levels.


Work Performed- In collaboration with the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives, establishes and implements strategic goals and objectives for the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and other programs to support Black students at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan.
