Compensation Range

Job Summary


The Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Manager is responsible for planning, coordination and implementation of Indigenous initiatives in the academic programs of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, working and engaging with internal and external stakeholders.

This includes programs and services to enhance the post-secondary experiences and outcomes of Indigenous learners and trainees within the Faculty, supports the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan

), and supports the Faculty's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action for education-related items, including learner/trainee recruitment, learner/trainee support, curriculum development/delivery, Indigenous community engagement, and communication activities.


The Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Manager has demonstrable experience working the Indigenous communites and an excellent understanding of protocols, and plays a key role in strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities in BC and works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

Organizational Status

The Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Manager reports to the Assistant Dean, Operations and Strategic Initiatives, UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Depending on the nature of the specific work or assignment, the incumbent may receive direction from the Director of Student Services, or from Associate Deans or other senior leadership.

Work Performed


Leadership:

  • Provides strategic advice and guidance to the Assistant Dean, Operations and Strategic Initiatives, on Indigenous education initiatives related to learner/trainee recruitment, retention, support services, and mentorship.
  • Leads, plans and participates in initiatives assigned by the Assistant Dean, Operations and Strategic Initiatives, aimed at advancing Indigenous strategic priorities in the Education Pillar of the Faculty's Strategic Plan as well as working with the senior leadership in the Faculty's response to the TRC Calls to Action education-related items. This includes development of annual work plans for approval by the Assistant Dean, Operations and Strategic Initiatives, to support the Indigenous education strategies, in alignment with the University and Faculty's strategic priorities.
  • Cultivates Indigenous education networks, relationships and community relationships that advance Indigenous education strategies within Pharm Sci academic programs, including liaising and working closely with the Faculty's senior leadership on Indigenous initiatives and activities.
  • Provides mentorship and support to staff who provide support to potential Indigenous learners/trainees. This includes providing leadership, direction and accountability to Academic Advisors to attain optimum results on projects and Pharm Sci academic program initiatives.

Admissions:

  • Leads the development, delivery and evaluation of admissions strategies and implementation plans for outreach to and recruitment of Indigenous learners at both the post-secondary and high school level. This may include the development of engagement sessions and surveys to identify needs of Indigenous learners, communities and organizations.
  • Strengthens strong on-going relationships between the Faculty and Indigenous communities and students of various ages through on-campus and in-community events, which includes the campus tour program, information sessions and career fairs.
  • Implements high-touch enrolment process that takes into consideration the unique and intersectional circumstances of the Indigenous applicant.
  • Advises and works with Pharm Sci units/programs that support the planning and delivery of annual orientation activities for first year Indigenous students.

Learner/Trainee Support:

  • Provides advice and support to administrative staff and faculty to develop learning activities related to cultural competency, cultural safety, and cultural humility and to ensure Pharm Sci academic programs incorporate education related to Indigenous practices, Indigenous health issues, the history and legacy of residential schools, the history of Indigenous Peoples in
