Appleby College's Summer Boarding Program welcomes students from around the world with diverse languages and backgrounds. Students attend Appleby College to improve their English language skills and experience Canada.

The Summer Boarding Program is modeled after the Appleby College student experience, with a goal of providing summer students with a snapshot of what life as an Appleby College student is like.

Students will live in boarding, attend class, participate in extra-curricular activities, and off-campus excursions.

Residing on campus at Appleby College, the Boarding Assistant, Summer Boarding Program is responsible for the supervision, well-being and safety of all students living in boarding.

Reporting to the Program Director, Boarding, Summer Boarding Program, this position will support the Summer Program's mission to create an exceptional on-campus living experience.


Specific Accountabilities:


  • Supervise the boarding house to ensure the safety of each student and actively participate in all aspects of the student's day including activities, mealtimes, games, study hall, offcampus excursions etc.
  • Provide support to the Program Director with the planning of activities and excursions
  • Supervise and lead students during on campus activities and offcampus excursions
  • Establish good communication with boarding students by being visible, approachable, available to answer questions, advise students on personal and academic matters, mediate disputes, maintain community standards and to deal with issues as they arise
  • Collaborate with the Program Director, Boarding and the Director, Academic Commercial Programs to establish open lines of communication and a positive culture in the residence
  • Follow all summer program policies and procedures including Appleby's Mutual Respect policy
  • Participate in all required training, including related to health and safety
  • Follow emergency procedure for medical and other emergencies, accompany students to medical facilities if required
  • Attend off campus trips with ESL and/or CEC students as required
  • Work with Summer Camp staff to ensure that all CEC students are fully engaged in each camp activity, arrive to camps on time and prepared
  • Work with Academy and ESL Instructors to ensure that all boarding students are on time and prepared for class
  • Follow disciplinary procedures for students according to established policies and protocols
  • Accompany and/or drive students to various outings during the weekdays and excursions during the weekends using the Appleby vehicles
  • Attend all formal program events (Welcome meeting, Graduation Ceremonies)
  • Assist in airport arrivals and departures of students, including carrying luggage, when applicable
  • Receive and respond to instruction from the Program Director,
  • Communicate to Director, Academic Commerical Programs and the Program Director on student performance and progress
  • Capture photos and videos of students when members of the Communication Team are unavailable

Knowledge, Skills & Technical Ability:


  • Post-Secondary Education at the University level,
  • Previous employment in a boarding setting is an asset
  • Second or multiple languages are considered a strong asset
  • Work experience in an academic/camp settings and/or experience with international students considered an asset
  • Experience building relationships with peers, students, parents and staff
  • Versatile and dynamic in running group activities
  • Able to deal with emergencies calmly and effectively
  • Reliable, team oriented, professional, and creative and versatile in running group activities
  • Be able to lift 20 kg
  • Bronze Cross and/or NLS certification in lifeguarding is an asset

Workplace Requirements and Conditions:


  • As a condition of employment, a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (if over 18)
  • Location: Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario
  • Travel with students as required
  • Evening and Weekend duties
  • Must reside on campus for the duration of employment
  • Valid Ontario Driver's License required to transport students using the Appleby College vans
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR is required.
  • Occasional Overtime
