Barge Operations Supervisor:


The Barge Operations Supervisor is responsible for the daily management of Seaspan Marine and Marine Petrobulk barge operators, barge fleets and their safe efficient cargo operations.

This position provides shoreside support for our barge operators, logistics, commercial, operations and maintenance teams. Key activities include ensuring that all operator certification, regulatory compliance, company policies and procedures are up to date. Auditing and evaluation of operator performance, scheduling of operators and handling time records.

This role assists in developing/reviewing cargo load and discharge plans, conducting ongoing and annual audits both external and internal, continued proficiency training of barge operators and the training of new barge operators.

Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Seaspan Marine - 10 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver, BC


What you'll do

  • Promotes and reinforces safety in the workplace. Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with the company's safety policies and that corporate safety initiatives are implemented optimally. Assesses and ensures that employees receive adequate and timely training to perform their job safely.
  • Hires and develops barge operators including scheduling, vacation requests and time sheet review.
  • Oversees vessel operational inspections and audits by regulatory and thirdparty surveyors and inspectors.
  • Ensures barge certification and documentation is kept up to date and all required testing and inspections is completed and detailed.
  • Conducts regular audits and safety checks on equipment and safety systems, ensures all equipment is repaired as required and detailed. Monitor's condition of equipment, reports required for repairs and recommendation for replacement as required.
  • Provides insight to build budgeting and refit planning.
  • Prepares repair and refit tasks with the maintenance team.
  • Prepares and review cargo load and discharge plans to ensure they are accurate for product segregation and volumes. Identifies any potential for cross contamination.
  • Ensures accurate qualified barge operators are assigned to each job.
  • Completes required documentation, including barge operator evaluations, barge operator time and expenses, and ensures onboard barges records are up to date.
  • Communicates with tug crews, terminal personnel, coordinators, barge operators and Director of Barge Operations to ensure information and knowledge of transfer operations is followed.
  • Participates in drills, inspections, and audits. Supports investigations as required.
  • Follows company guidelines and directives.

What you'll bring

  • Completed Grade 12 education.
  • Supervisor of Oil Transfer Operations certificate or Tanker Endorsement with oil transfer issued by Transport Canada, Chemical endorsement an asset.
  • 5 years of experience in tanker operations
  • Experience of supervising a unionized team
  • Good Mechanical Knowledge
  • Valid passport and ability to travel to the United States
  • Understanding of company operating procedures and policy and terminal guidelines.
  • Knowledge of barge cargo operations and mechanical systems
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Willing to work various hours and travel as required.
  • Planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to handle emergency response and lead people under high pressure.
  • Knowledge of Applicable regulations contained within the framework of the Canada Shipping Act
