POSITION TYPE: 1 permanent, full-time position, 37.5 hours per week.


JOB SUMMARY


The Childcare Assistant/Cook is primarily responsible for delivering a nutritious, healthy food program consisting of a full lunch and two snacks daily for the children of the daycare centre.

Is responsible to offer a variety of health-conscious food choices that reflect the Canada Food Guide's recommendations for daily serving sizes and food choices; while operating within a designated budget.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares one meal and 2 snacks for children on a daily basis
  • In conjunction with staff, plans a rotating 34week menu following the MELCC regulations and the Health Inspector's standards for food preparation
  • Posts the menu daily and adjust as required
  • Logs any food substitutions on communication book
  • Posts all children's food allergies and intolerances, while they are in attendance
  • Orders food items required for the operation of the food service area as required, with direction from the Supervisor or Director
  • Receives orders, stores inventory and keeps track of products routinely using storage areas, fridges, and freezer areas
  • Maintains and provides a grocery list to the supervisor and/or director for ordering
  • Reports to Site Supervisor/ Director regarding any equipment pertaining to food service, that is in need of repair or replacement
  • Maintains and organizes the kitchen and all food service and storage areas in a clean, safe, and orderly manner
  • Communicates any issues relating to food services to other staff members
  • Ensures food handling guidelines and safety procedures are maintained at all times
  • Ensures the overall cleanliness of the kitchen is maintained
  • Attends staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Answers the door buzzer and/or phone as required
  • Works as part of a team within the childcare centre
  • Provides light housekeeping duties daily including laundry and cleaning of equipment
  • Orders cleaning products as required in collaboration with supervisor and/or director
  • Ensures all cleaning products are labeled (WHMIS) and stored properly
  • Be flexible and willing to act in the role of a childcare assistant if required
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism, including confidentiality of children and families, ethical and professional behaviours
  • Reports any suspected child abuse or neglect
  • Advises supervisor of any concerns families may share with you
  • Adheres to the policies and procedures of CAHRD
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements:


  • High School education or equivalent preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Food Handlers Certificate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have well developed communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with children and parents from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • A minimum of 1year experience working as a cook
  • Must have excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to involve and support coworkers in daytoday activities and issues that may occur and to seek support and guidance from others when necessary
  • Must have the ability to multitask, to be flexible and adaptable in light of changing needs and priorities and to cope effectively with changing situations that may occur
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity which recognizes the importance of a respectful workplace, and putting others' needs before one's own needs
  • Experience and understanding of the Indigenous community is essential
  • Must obtain clearance of appropriate criminal record and child abuse registry checks without incident
