This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement this position has an expected appointment end date of August 31, 2024 and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $75,010 - $84,394.


Location - North Campus Edmonton.


Department summary


The SMART Network is a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on medical device innovations and health technologies that prevent injury, restore function, and provide advanced technological-based solutions that enhance the well-being of persons with diverse abilities.

Members over 300 are internationally renowned for their break through discoveries and innovations.

The SMART Network focuses on achieving maximum levels of independence and autonomy for people who experience inequities due to societal barriers.

Through its business unit, Smart Technology Innovations (ST Innovations), the SMART Network attracts extensive collaborations with industry and provides services that readily facilitate private-public interactions in the area of health innovations.

This in turn positions the University as a critical player in advancing the health and wealth of Albertans.


Position summary


Reporting to the SMART Network director, and working with staff from SMART Technology Innovations (ST Innovations), Project Management Office (PMO), Research Services Office (RSO) and Supply Management Services (SMS), this position is responsible for leadership and management of operations of the SMART Network and ST Innovations.

This role also manages all procurement processes for goods and services which includes managing transactions such as contracts, purchase orders, competitive bids and preferred supplier agreements.

This position works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to optimize the use and interdisciplinary interactions within the network.

The Operations Manager is responsible for the operational leadership of the SMART Network and the creation and maintenance of a lab implemented quality system as well as regulatory consulting for preclinical testing.

This position works closely with the Director and is involved in strategic planning, business plan development, decision making, functional oversight and financial planning including preparing grants.

This position is also the liaison between the business development team of ST Innovations and SMART Network researchers.


Duties

  • Financial Planning and Management _
  • Design and implement an appropriate framework for planning, prioritization and development of projects in the SMART Network cores.
  • Write proposals with the ST Innovations business team
  • Prepare budgets and track expenditures as they relate to each project
  • Current budget responsibility $10,953,180
  • Operational Planning and Management_
  • Provide oversight to project management: schedules project meetings, prepare monthly progress reports, identify operational issues, and ensure purchasing and implementation is on time and budget.
  • Serve on the executive committee for both ST Innovations and the SMART Network
  • Works with over 50 PIs and researchers to identify strategic direction of the SMART Network
  • Organize and participate in regular meetings with the Industry Advisory Board, SMART Network Core groups and executive meetings.
  • Organize and participate in an annual retreat for the SMART Network
  • Organize and host tours of the SMART Network for Government Officials, Industry and other academic centers as well as other group across campus.
  • Develop strategic plans for the SMART Network and ST Innovations
  • Prepare and present oral and/or written presentations on project activities as required
  • Develop progress reports, scientific reports and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required
  • Develop tools to promote collaboration and networking between ST Innovations and the SMART Network members
  • Implement outreach programs
  • Purchasing and Facility Management_
  • Complete and submit appropriate purchase requisition forms to SMS, for subsequent review by RSO staff, for all purchases outlined in the project documentation, ensure equipment quotes are appropriately updated and/or replaced as technology changes
  • Liaise with the University's Customs Division to resolve customs issues with respect to export and import of goods from/to the United States and other countries
  • Act as a liaison for vendors, researchers, staff, and SMS on a variety of purchasing issues
  • Maintain purchasing source documentation in an accurate, comprehensive, consistent and reliable manner and any discrepancies are identified to the FRTA for resolution
