The University of Alberta Hospital Critical Care Program is recruting a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join their supportive and cohesive team of professionals.

This CNS position is a clinical leadership role with a focus on promotion of evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise supporting the General Systems ICU and Burn Unit, with opportunity to support other ICU's within the portfolio.

The CNS role encompasses responsibilities of clinician, leader, educator, consultant, and researcher in the field of Critical Care.

As a representative of the critical care program, the CNS will assist with the development of program, site, zone and provincial initiatives, education programs, quality improvement initiatives, and development of clinical guidelines and protocols.

This leadership position facilitates problem solving, and decision-making to influence the development, implementation and evaluation of patient and program goals.

The CNS is responsible in ensuring safe, high quality and evidence-based nursing care is provided consistently.

This includes leading projects to improve care delivery by both developing skills and ensuring the standards for nursing practice and education content/delivery is based on best evidence.

The CNS cultivates and supports a culture of continuous quality improvement by monitoring KPI metrics for quality and performance needs and engaging the interdisciplinary team for active participation.

The CNS will directly lead and mentor within the interdisciplinary team and help facilitate any culture and systems changes required to achieve quality patient and family centered care.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).Please enter information in this field.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Master's degree, preferably Master of Nursing.

Five years of recent clinical experience in a critical care environment, with expertise substantiated through education, experience, and required credentials.

Proven leadership skills with the ability to develop and inspire effective teams through collaboration, cooperation and coordination. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams to implement change. Effective decision making, coaching, teaching, delegation, prioritization. Strong knowledge of adult learning principles and demonstrated teaching skills in large and small groups. Strong working knowledge of process improvement principles. Knowledge of healthcare organization and current trends in order to provide a systems approach. Knowledge of research design methodologies, quality improvement, program evaluation approaches, and outcome measurements. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and negotiate within an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office suite, electronic medical records, Connect Care, and Netcare.


Preferred Qualifications:

National certification in Critical Care. Previous CNE experience.
