Job Description Summary


This position is responsible for supporting the implementation of placemaking and community building strategies within the Community Development and Engagement unit as part of Campus and Community Planning s overall mandate to support a thriving community on campus and to provide an exceptional sense of place at UBC.

Primary duties involve supporting the development, delivery and evaluation of community programming, outdoor events, placemaking initiatives, and community engagement that supports community development policies and objectives.

Other duties may be assigned as required. Some weekend and evening work required.

Organizational Status

Operates within Campus and Community Planning and reports to the Manager, Community Programs and Outreach.

Work Performed

  • Develop and implement evaluation of placemaking and community building programs, initiatives
and related policies for students, faculty, staff, neighbourhood residents, alumni and the general

public.

  • Works alongside the Manager, Community Programs and Outreach, collaborates with campus partners and vendors on the planning and implementation of largescale community events
  • Research and assess community needs to support appropriate, tailored and effective programming
for various UBC communities in support of UBC s Strategic Plan, the UBC Land Use Plan and Vancouver s Campus

Plan objectives as well as priority areas such as sustainability, wellbeing and equity and inclusion.

  • Coordinate a number of initiatives, events and programs occurring simultaneously, requiring detailed
advance planning as well as the ability to react, decide and improvise under pressure.

  • Develop and maintain budgets specific to initiatives, programs and events, to meet overall program
budget objectives. This includes coordinating timely payments to suppliers and keeping accurate accounting of expenditures for tracking and reporting.

  • Manage contracts with on and offcampus suppliers; coordinate and participate in various meetings
with campus partners; and assist with all matters of event & program preparation and execution

including follow-up, reporting and analysis after successful completion.

  • Coordinate the administration of a community grant program including promotion, scheduling of
committee.

  • Ensure that UBC policies related to all aspects of public space use, event coordination, financial and
supply management are adhered to. Manage risks appropriately and propose measures to address

such scenarios.

  • Initiate and maintain active liaison with faculties and other campus departments and units such as,
but not limited to, Arts and Culture venues, Student Housing and Hospitality Services, UBC

Recreation and Athletics, Alumni, Building Operations, UBC Food Services and Campus Security to

ensure coordination of event and programming logistics.

  • Work closely with Manager of Community Programs and Outreach, Campus and Community
Planning (C+CP) and other UBC Communication staff to support the creation and execution of

communication strategies that promote and raise awareness of community building programs,

events and initiatives.

  • Work with partners across the campus and C+CP communication staff to identify and prioritize
online and social media opportunities for promoting campus community building programs and

initiatives.

  • Create, schedule and implement digital content within a variety of social media platforms. This
includes writing content for websites, Twitter, Facebook, and helping to analyze impact and reach of

social media and online engagement.

  • Research, write, and edit copy for articles, case studies, reports and proposals in consistent writing style
