    ABOUT THE ROLE

The Creative Storyteller is a great writer above all else. But not just any great writer. We need someone who can quickly build a deep understanding of Shopify's ethos, vibe, history, voice, and tone. You'll play a vital role in our shift to direct-to-audience storytelling by crafting thumb-stopping content for our owned channels. You'll help Shopify lead the conversation, take a strong stance, stir the pot, say the hard thing, share our wins, celebrate our merchants, reveal our data and assertively tell our own story.

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    • Craft stories across platforms that earn our audience's time — from newsroom features and opinion pieces to video scripts, and social copy. From short form to long form, with a clear POV
    • Quickly learn and apply Shopify's distinct voice into all writing (be bold, direct, human, and unorthodox), adapting the right tone based on context and audience
    • Effectively resolve feedback from a range of internal stakeholders without sacrificing our voice or leaving our audience with a Frankendraft
    • Collaborate across Shopify to understand the priorities you'll base your writing on
    • Identify the right combination of rich media assets to bring a compelling story to life – from photo and video to social cards and data viz – and partner with in-house creative teams on production
    • Approach tasks with creative energy and willingness to dive into the unobvious
    • Experiment often and continually build your storytelling toolkit
    • Inspire the team to push the boundaries of what's possible using a range of storytelling formats
    • Manage multiple high-intensity projects, being able to context switch and pivot quickly.
    • Be self reliant and do it yourself first
    • Own the success and quality of your projects, playing a key role in solving the hardest parts of the hardest problems
    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • Exceptional writing skills—this should be your superpower. We're talking storytellers. Someone who's been told time and again that they are quick witted, sharp, a word whiz
    • Portfolio of existing published work
    • A track record of writing with strong voice and point of view
    • Experience in communications, marketing, advertising, and/or journalism, either in-house or agency
    • Memelord status: we want someone who embraces meme and internet culture, and lives and breathes the current zeitgeist
    • Track record of delivering incredible content in a fast-paced environment where requirements and scope can change quickly
    • Experience with rich media storytelling (including video, audio, and graphics)
    • Strong ability to identify interesting narratives
    • High standards and an obsessive eye for detail
    • Proven ability to work quickly and manage high-intensity projects effectively
    • Adept at building relationships and influencing across teams

It's a bonus if you have:

    • Experience in the retail, commerce, and/or technology industry
    • A background in branded content

    About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we've grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people's lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

    About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

    • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
    • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
    • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
    • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
    • Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
    • Work digital-first for your daily work
