Job Summary

The Recreation Development Specialist I is responsible for providing comprehensive Therapeutic Recreation Services for clients of the Mental Health and Addictions Program.

The Recreation Development Specialist is a member of the interprofessional care team and is responsible for the development, planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of comprehensive and individual Therapeutic Recreation Services.

The Recreation Development Specialist will be expected to adhere to the APIED process of assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation.

The Recreation Development Specialist will maintain an active clinical caseload and will be assigned other duties as required.

The Recreation Development Specialist will actively participate in education development and provide education to team members, patients, caregivers, community partners and stakeholders.

The work also includes clinical supervision of recreation therapy support staff and volunteers.

The Recreation Development Specialist will be responsible to precept Therapeutic Recreation students and offer other clinical education experience to students within Eastern Health.

This position receives clinical support and mentoring from the RDS II at the Waterford.


This position reports to the Program Manager of Mental Health and Addictions and maintains accountability to the Professional Practice Consultant for professional integrity issues.


Job Demands
Regularly moves objects; occasionally lifts or transports equipment and supplies up to 25 lbs.

and pushes or pulls equipment using light to medium forces for patient handling and portering to move clients/patients over 50 lbs.

Regularly stands, walks, and works in cramped positions.
Occasionally sits to work on computer and drive clients to/from activities.
Regularly required visual concentration when assessing clients.
Regularly has time pressures and deadlines to complete assessments and reports.


Job Qualifications

Graduation with an approved/recognized Baccalaureate degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation with major course work in Therapeutic Recreation is required.

Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) is required.
Experience working as a Recreation Specialist in a health care setting is an asset.

Extensive knowledge in the areas of assessment, assessment tools, program design/protocols, client care plans, clinical documentation, therapeutic interventions/facilitation techniques, leadership, supervision, workload measurement and group dynamics is required.

Demonstrated competencies in problem solving and program planning.
Ability to be self-motivated and to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Exhibited strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to demonstrate a positive, respectful, and sensitive approach to the needs of the clients.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.

Possession of a class IV driver's license and satisfactory drivers abstract will be required depending on the need of the site.
