The Role:


Collaborating with business areas across the City, Legal Services leverages knowledge of the City's organization and operations with legal expertise to provide valued advice and support throughout the corporation.

The branch is highly engaged in providing the best support possible through expertise and creativity, keeping client satisfaction at the heart of our work.

Reporting to the Director, Solicitors, the Legal Supervisor guides the Infrastructure, Operations and Procurement Practice Group. This role provides project oversight and leads a team of solicitors, in addition to performing ongoing legal work.

As a member of the Legal Services extended leadership team, the Legal Supervisor also provides input into branch priorities, strategic plans, and budget planning processes.


First year goals and deliverables:


  • Deliver consistent and dedicated leadership through team priority setting and effective management of resources
  • Draft and review legal agreements and bylaws
  • Provide strategic legal advice and recommendations to lawyers, City Administration and City Council to ensure departmental project objectives are achieved.
  • Anticipate opportunities and challenges while influencing policy, planning and strategic initiatives
  • Foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
  • Integrate multidisciplinary teams to work collaboratively with stakeholders supporting corporate and City Council priorities
  • Build new and innovative collaborative partnerships with business areas, City Council, lawyers, experts and other levels of government

Qualifications:


  • Completion of LL.B or its equivalent and membership with the Law Society of Alberta or ability to attain membership immediately upon appointment
  • Significant experience working with complex and specialized legal files
