Working for the Department of Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry hosts a large undergraduate and graduate education program.

We are a research-intensive department with most Faculty members leading cutting-edge independent research programs across a broad range of topics.


Position
The individual will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Ing Swie Goping. The Goping lab is a basic research laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry. The required tasks of this position include conducting experiments pertaining to cell biology, biochemical, molecular biology, and animal studies. Additional tasks include maintaining equipment, ordering and inventorying lab supplies, and ensuring lab remains compliant with EHS regulations.


Duties

  • Conduct experiments (75%)
  • Performs cell culture experiments such as standard mammalian cell culture, and complex 3D cell culture of breast cancer patientderivedorganoids
  • Performs biochemical assays such as western blotting, molecular biology
  • Performs cellbased assays such as microscopy, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry
  • Assists with mouse model work related to breast cancer studies
  • Analyzes data, performs statistical analysis
  • Maintains detailed and organized data logs and lab notebooks
  • Assists with training of undergraduate research project students
  • Responsible for management of the lab (20%)
  • Ensures maintenance of all equipment especially tissue culture incubators, laminar hoods, fridges, freezers, liquid nitrogen tanks, and other equipment
  • Ensures lab is compliant with biosafety and environmental health and safety
  • Maintains lab reagent inventory list and inventory levels
  • Ensures that all biohazard, chemical, and lab safety issues are followed as per U of A policies / procedures and that hazardous materials are properly catalogued, accounted for, and stored
  • Coordinates with team members to facilitate purchasing basic supplies, repairs and maintains records
  • Provides training to students and lab personnel regarding safety and experimental protocols
  • Contributes to the production of laboratory outputs. (5%)
  • Organizes data under supervision of the Principal Investigator
  • Presents data at lab meetings

Qualifications

  • BSc or Lab Technology diploma (eg. Biochemistry, cell biology, biology, physiology, genetics, etc).
  • 5 years or more experience working in a wet lab.
  • Extensive experience with mammalian tissue culture
  • Experience with cloning/molecular biology, flow cytometry, microscopy, histology and mouse model work
