Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead and collaborate with the Scientific Liaison and others supporting the work of OIAC on the development of scientific and technical materials related to vaccines and immunization matters including vaccine program implementation, priority populations, clinical guidance and vaccine safety, effectiveness and immunogenicity; and, present materials at meetings for OIAC members to deliberate on.
  • Prepare detailed scientific, technical and research reports, summaries and presentations and other content specific products
  • Provide leadership and advise on the approach to the development of meeting materials (e.g., framing of topics, scanning of literature, and evidence included in OIAC statements) to PHO program staff.
  • Represent PHO with public health and health care system partners, Ontario provincial ministries, and provincial and national advisory committees to facilitate and/or participate in discussions on gaps and priorities, in order to influence PHO planning and inform provincial public health policy, legislation and the work of the OIAC.
  • Ensures that scientific methodology guides all decision making in the development of PHO products, procedures and activities as these relate to immunization and vaccine preventable diseases:
  • Applies scientific methods to the development and delivery of PHO evidence synthesis, program evaluations, and the identification of best practices, in concert with PHO program staff.
  • Develops and advises on the methodology used for any systematic literature review processes and provides advice on approaches using indirect data for questions that cannot be answered using available literature.
  • Develops and implements strategies to continuously improve rigour and relevance of PHO knowledge products and services.
  • Leads and/or contributes to crossfunctional project teams to generate and synthesize evidence and disseminate scientific knowledge, including mobilizing expert team members, providing guidance and ensuring high quality products for release.
  • Provides response support in a health emergency as required.
  • Provides expertise in public health science in the interpretation and translation of research to operational action and/or release of knowledge/reporting products.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Credibility as a recognized expert in vaccines and immunization with skills to facilitate and/or participate in key policy, planning, and related discussions and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of PHO's mandate, relevant legislation such as the HPPA and PHIPPA and the Ontario Public Health Standards.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's publicly funded immunization programs in order to develop/prepare responses to scientific and technical issues on behalf of PHO.
  • Knowledge of scientific research theories and methodologies, and skills to lead and/or contribute to projects to generate and synthesize evidence and disseminate new scientific knowledge and to ensure rigorous scientific methodology guides all decision making.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations and trends in epidemiology, public health, population health assessment and surveillance.
  • Knowledge of project management methods and skills to lead and/or contribute to projects.
  • Knowledge of public health areas of specialization outside of immunization including, vaccine preventable diseases, public health surveillance and epidemiology.

  • Works within the framework of PHO's mandate, services, priorities and procedures, and scientific standards and methodologies.
  • Develops and implements strategies to continuously improve rigour and relevance of PHO knowledge products and services.
  • Ensures high quality scientific evidencebased summaries are brought forward to OIAC members to support deliberations and the development of recommendations.
