    Career Opportunity

    Reporting to the Chief Engineer, Renewable Energy Programs (REP), the incumbent is responsible for delivering technical review and oversight programs to ensure that renewable energy programs are viable, safe, and efficient. Setting technical benefits for projects and ensure that those benefits are delivered. Coordinating and overseeing the development and implementation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, renewable energy generation, energy storage and other renewable energy projects (collectively REP Systems). This includes the design, review, and approval of electrical and software architecture; equipment selection; installation, testing, commissioning, and safety certification. The REP Systems include all electrical and software systems required to design and manage power generation, supply, control, and optimization of smart fleet charging and dispatch, to enable the adoption of all-electric transit buses, wheel-trans, and non-revenue support vehicles, as well as renewable generation and energy storage as part of TTC's net zero mandate.

    What You Will Do

    • Ensuring the timely and efficient design and construction of EV charging systems, vehicle charging management systems, and the inspection, repair, and maintenance of EV chargers to support the TTC's all-electric transit vehicle fleets.
    • Developing short and long term plans, determining priorities, and coordinating programs to ensure timely and effective implementation of vehicle charging infrastructure.
    • Providing electrical engineering expertise in the preparation, review, and approval of detailed designs; writing specifications.
    • Estimating and scheduling of various projects, including solar installations and energy storage systems.
    • Initiating and approving plans and projects for the construction, inspection, repair, and maintenance of vehicle charging equipment and electrical systems.
    • Analyzing bids for materials, equipment, and services; recommending purchases and participating in the awarding of contracts.
    • Responding to onsite Ontario One Call requests as mandated by law.
    • Ensuring that all electrical work conforms, and is inspected to the applicable standards, Electrical Safety Authority/EUSA (Electrical Utility Safety Association), and other power utility standards.
    • Ensuring the electrical safety of employees and the general public.
    • Promoting and maintaining professional working relationships and communications among staff, management, consultants, contractors, and external agencies.
    • Set and monitor the section's goals and objectives; monitor and control the section's Operating and Capital budgets.
    • Developing business cases to incorporate battery energy storage and solar energy systems.
    • Ensuring reports outlining labour, equipment, and expended materials are readily available for review and analysis to assist in planning, estimating, and cost control.
    • Preparing justifications for expenditures, monitoring expenditures against approved budgets and justifying variances.
    • Substituting for the Chief Engineer of REP Department during his/her absences.
    • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

    What Qualifications Do You Bring

    • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (e.g. Electrical and/or Software Engineering), along with extensive practical knowledge and directly related experience in a supervisory/management capacity; or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is required.
    • Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, electronic, and software principles, methods, and practices.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of renewable generation, electrical distribution systems, Ontario's energy market, and regulatory requirements.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of procedures and techniques applicable to the installation, maintenance, repair, and construction of vehicle chargers, electrical load controls, electrical substations, underground feeder networks, and wiring/service systems and equipment.
    • Sound knowledge of applicable electrical codes, electrical industry standards/practice, and relevant government legislation/regulations (e.g. Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Human Rights Code, environmental regulations, etc.)
    • Knowledge of business administration, budgetary and financial principles, fiscal and human resources policies and legislation/regulations regarding safety, human rights, employment, etc.
    • Ability to take independent action when coping with problems, changing situations, and emergencies.
    • Sound judgement; highly developed management, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and work with professional multi-disciplined teams, deal with complex issues, and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Effectively lead, coach and motivate staff to ensure sectional objectives are met with due regard for quality, quantity, effectiveness, and deadlines.
    • Ability to prepare and interpret complex reports, recognize problems, and evaluate solutions.
    • Must be able to travel to various project sites within the City of Toronto in a timely manner.
    • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
    • Must have or acquire comprehensive knowledge of TTC organizational structure, operations, policies and practices applicable to the work performed.
    • Ability to interpret/apply legislation and technical information to the TTC's electrical power requirements.
    • Must obtain WHMIS certification and OHSA training.
